Cylinder numbering?

1055 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Ranger
Anyone know the numbering sequence for a 4.9 deville. i.e. start at bottom corner, move clockwise. I own the GM service manual but can't find the info anywhere in it. Any help greatly appreciated.

You can probably guess why I asked this. I pulled one to many plug wires and want to make absolutely sure that I get them in the right order before turning the key. I saw one of Ranger's previous posts about pulling the plugs and turning #1 to TDC. Is this necessary if I know the cylinder numbers, know the distributor numbers, and haven't tried to start the vehicle. Thanks Ranger. You're always the greatest of help.
The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2- like an old chevy small block. #1 is the first position on the distributor counter-clockwise of the connector block (which when looking down should be about 4 o'clock). Continue the order counter-clockwise with #2 ending just before the connector block of the distributor. The above post by Ranger is a good depiction of the cylinder positions.
