custom black headliner? also, how do you "black out" the exterior chrome trim?

I wish a black headliner was an option from the factory, has anyone had a custom headliner installed?

Also, are there any aftermarket black trim pieces available?

There's a product that 3M makes called "blackout tape". Your local auto part store should have it. I know there's pics floating around this forum of someone that did the chrome window trim with it.

Re: custom black headliner? also, how do you "black out" the exterior chrome trim?

I am currently in the market for a radar detector, and in my internet searches I came across a paint-on product called Veil G4 that appears to really help with reducing a vehicle's exposure to laser speed traps. No! - I am not in any way associated with this product, but their promotional videos do seem to indicate that it does drastically reduce the ability of police laser to obtain a lock on the vehicle's speed.

It is simply painted on headlights, fog lights, and anything else that can reflect the laser beam (i.e CHROME) and it appears to add a "smoked" appearance when applied. I was going to try it in conjunction with a good radar detector (Passport 9500ix), but after looking at the front of my V, I realized that I would have to coat not only the headlights / foglights, but also the grill, chrome trim aournd that, etc. As I do not prefer to "black out" these items on my car, I decided that the Veil was not for me.

However, if you are looking to blackout the chrome on yours, this might be an interesting solution as it simply paints on, can be removed, and if you want it darker, you can simply apply more coats. Of course, the side benefit would be a (purported) significant reduction in exposure to laser spped traps.

Veil's site is here: http://www.laserveil.com/ and do keep in mind that I have not tried this to be able to either confirm nor deny that it works as intended. If you watch their videos though, they do appear to be pretty compelling.

Myth Busters tested this along with a car wrapped in tin foil. They didn't notice an improvement from what i remember.

yeah, i'm not in favor of "taping" up a car in this price range...i guess i was wondering if anyone has actually had the trim removed/repainted/reinstalled?

i also noticed that the coupe has a black headliner...unfortunately, the wagon does not...

Veil doesn't really work for anything but laser, and it only aids your jamer. the jamer does the real work. If your worried about laser, a radar detector will only tell you that you just got a ticket. If you want a Jammer, LI (laser Interceptor) is the worlds best for jamers, but you do pay for it. There is a binder mx47 that is the second best laser jammer out there. Basically you have to look at what your trying to protect. Veil basically absorbs SOME of the laser beam and also allows the jammer to work. If you have one of the 2 best jammers you really don't need the veil out there. For a caddy you really need the LI to be 100% protected. If you satisfied with 90-95% of the time then the Binder will get you covered for about 500 cheaper. You have to pay to play let me tell you and the installation will make or break you being protected.

The Veil really doesn't add a tint to your car, I guess it does a bit, but not much. People don't spray it on anything but tags and headlights/foglights/brake lights. A lighter color car will also help you to not be detected as much. The V's have a big front and a huge ass so they are pretty easy to nail with laser, add the front plate and your screwed unless you have a jammer.

As far as the tape, I'm one of many who have used it. I have never seen it at an automtive store. Had to order it from Jegs or summit. I know you may thing, man taping on a 70k car, well when it's done it looks like the chrome was that color to begin with and it matches the rest of your trim on your doors. It is darn near bullet proof, and will withstand car washes and everything. I looked and saw I had a chip from I'm guess a rock.. not sure. It's 5 bucks a roll, takes abut 30 minutes a side to install.

I can show you pics of my car, but there are pics out there, PM if you want pics.

Oh yeah, as far as a radar detector, only way to fly is V1 or Passport.... Dont waste your $ on anything else IMO FWIW.

1 more thing, if you decide to have your chrome painted, make sure the shop you take it to has done chrome before. Chrome is hard to paint over, and must be prepared properly to even stand a chance of lasting.... even then it may or may not work.... (Wish someone would make true black parts for our car)

thanks...i may even consider getting a black chrome type finish done...

Have your headliner wrapped in alcantara....done. For the rest, I would go to a local bodyshop and have them spray all the chrome.
yup...just wish it was a factory option...

that looks MUCH better, thanks!

That's what Imma do this spring. Powder coating the wheels, spraying the trim and porting the blower are all up next.
can't wait to see pics!

Domsz06,

Completely agree. Will be ordering an LI shortly, to be used in conjunction with a Passport 9500ix. The Veil definitely does help mitigate exposure to Lidar, but I don't like the smoked look it adds. Still struggling with where to mount the sensors, without them being an obtrusive eyesore (I think I have a solution though). Will create a separate post once installed.

(Sorry to hijack)

call cliff at LI. Tell him you want the extra mounting brackets. He has brackets for our car so there would be no cutting of the grill.

PM me for more details.

To the OP, I had my front grille painted in 'Rallye Black', a color that was used to paint the hood stripes on the old Dodge Challengers. I would really suggest the color as it is a very nice midpoint between matte black and gloss black. I am going to have the strip of chromed plastic on the trunk painted in the same color because I'm very happy with how the grille turned out.

can't powder coat the grills. They are plastic.

I would not use the tape on anything other then the window trim, have your paint guy paint the rest. Heck if your dropping the car off at your body shop then have him paint your window as well. I just didn't know how to take my window trim off so I used tape.

Black chroming if done correct looks great! It's all a personal opinion. IMO Powdercoating is stronger and more durable then painting rims. Paint chips and flakes off easier then the powdercoat.
