Yup. It's a 3.6 thing. Mine went out at 90K miles. Had it fixed at 105K miles. Car is now at 121,000 Miles.

LY7s and LLTs (2nd Gen) were known for Timing chain problems; LY7s were deemed notorious for that though because of the PCV system along with GM messing up the oil life monitor initially. Realistically, if you're paying attention to the oil level and taking care of it, you'll be fine for a good while.

This is something that is always on my mind. My '06 CTS with the 3.6 now has 131,000 on it but so far, so good. I keep a consistent listen to it especially when starting cold in the morning. I've keep up the oil and filter changes at regular intervals and check under the hood twice a week, every week. Although I keep it a little under full, anytime it is a quarter of a quart down, I'll add it. The PCV Valve was mentioned above and I took the advice from these boards, bought a new one and drilled it out to the new recommendations before installation.

Some mornings it rattles some and other mornings it's quiet, but so far so good again, it hasn't sounded any worse since I bought it 38,000 miles ago. But for those with the experience, will I have a good warning and what does it sound like when it's time to replace it? In other words, where do you draw the line?

Thanks

I've had a 2007 for 11 years, bought it with 43K, now has 156K. It has the 2.8 engine. There have been plenty of issues, multiple wheel bearings, radiator, transmission and power steering lines and the usual electronic problems. Yes it uses oil, don't they all? I check the oil religiously and regularly change the oil with Mobil 1. The timing chain is quiet and original.

My original goal was to keep it 10 years, I'm on 11. It's the Mrs. car, I'm a big car guy (FW's and big wagons). I'm down south looking for a replacement car, no luck yet (in my price). I do know this, the day the chain goes, I call the JY.
