I used to beg my dad to buy me Matchbox cars when I was a kid. My favorite one, ever, was a blue W124 Mercedes 300. They were always more realistic than Hot Wheels. Not always better made, but always based on cars you could actually aspire to own when you finally grew up.

I think Matchbox still had metal underbodies back in the 80s. I remember them shorting out my Bachmann train set when I drove over the railroad crossing.

RIP... I sent him a letter telling him what a big matchbox car collection I had and how much I liked his product when I was little. I still have the reply letter from him containing a full history behind the toy. I still have all my matchbox cars in A1 condition. I actually used to wax them...LOL.

I had a huge collection, too, as a kid. STUPIDLY, I sold them off in a flea market sale years ago. Wish I had many of 'em back. They were alot of fun.

Kudo's and points to Wheelman322 for waxing his Matchbox cars! I wax my 1/18th scale diecast car collection, so I can appreciate the attention to detail there. In fact, just this past week, I picked up a silver 2000 Cadillac DeVille DTS in the 1/18th scale version. It had a fair amount of dust on it; I bought it from a second hand shop at the retirement campus I work at. It waxed up pretty nicely. I wish it were red, as that's what the other 16 or so models I have are painted.

Come on, ALBUNDY, leave the Ford/GM comparisons alone on the Matchbox thing! Both companies make some awesome cars, both companies have made their share of absolute blunders! Don't get me started....:want::thepan:

Thanks for the Kudo's J. The only thing I saved from my childhood was my matchbox cars and my Hess trucks. I also have a couple of Franklin Mint scale models that my family got me on birthdays and what not. Since childhood, My life pretty much revolves around cars, whether scale models or the real thing.
