My deville seems to have a very slow coolant leak and it has ever since i owned it if you're looking at the car from the front end underneath it kinda to the left of the motor you see a little puddle of orange and onetime i actually saw it dripping real fast but i cant seem to find it there almost never seems to be coolant loss only every once in a while it appears to be low but the engine bay is so tight i cant see where it is coming from. a lot of times there isn't even a puddle under the car i just check it every time i know i'm gonna be driving for an hour or more cause the coolant sensor is broke i think that's common on these cars from what i understand and it always says "CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" so i keep an eye on it

If I'm not mistaken, the only things on the left side of the motor that have coolant is the upper radiator hose, and the coolant bottle. Get the car up to op temp and check those real good. You will have to take off the upper radiator shield to see the hose. There are also some metal hoses along the firewall, but everything else is on the right. Of course it could be dripping from anywhere and running across some sheet metal or other structures under there before it falls to the ground.

this is difficult to interpret -
depending on whether you are feet first or head first under the car would determine which is left or right
you should stick to "accepted terns" DRIVER SIDE or PASSENGER SIDE -

if the leak is on the PASSENGER SIDE - check the SERGE TANK -
over time it becomes brittle and due to the constant heating/pressure cycles -
thousands of tiny cracks develop and the tank will begin to weep coolant -

if the leak is on the DRIVER SIDE - look at the cross-over gasket -

....... and under the surge tank here is a plastic T that is prone to crack. As well as the usual hoses and fittings over there on the passenger side.

Also, check the surge tank cap for seal leaks and the overflow hose (not the purge line) for leaks.

Correct level is half full, cold.At that level the Check Coolant Level warning should not be on. No, a faulty coolant level sensor is not "common".

Post moved from the "drive it hard" thread.

Rent a cooling system pressure tester from a parts store. With the engine cold, pump it up to 20 psi and start looking with a GOOD light. You'll find the weep - fix it.

New surge tank cap? Underside of the surge tank and lower fittings all dry ? Steel heater lines along the firewall side of the engine dry and clean ?

Surge tank at the correct cold fill level ? Purge line flowing properly and connections tight ?

Yeah its the passanger side.. im sorry shouldve made that more clear and what i am getting out of this is that first of all i should replace the coolant tank and would it come with a new sensor? So the dash will quit saying "check coolant level" and i will take a harder look at the car when i get home too

AND the tank will be translucent white - rather than dark yellow -
MUCH easier to see the coolant level inside the tank -

Yeah that ^^^^^^^
Side tanks are known to crack after many heat/cool cycles and seep coolant. It can be hard to see as the radiator is behind the condenser so if the crack is on the front of the side tank it will be hidden, but from your description, the drip should be visible on the bottom of the radiator after removing the air dam.

Add in the hose necks/cracks as well. They can start real small, the damn coolant can travel/drip not even close to the actual leak. And a loose/overtight/cockeyed hose clamp. Look at the bottom of the hoses really good.

Really love the air dams/deflectors, they really do help with MPG and cleanliness in the bay.
But, leaks can be harder to find. Sometimes take it off, then cardboard under the car for a few days.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see a place to plug in the coolant level sensor on this replacement tank. Maybe it's cheaper because it doesn't have one? Also, the pressure cap is marked 17 lbs. rather than the 18 pounds that it should be. (At least that's what it is on my '04 DeVille). If I were to buy this tank, I would definitely test the cap to be sure that it meets specifications.

Don't sweat the cap pressure. Remember, pressure is what raises the boiling point. That stated pressure is simply the pressure at which the cap will vent. At a 50/50 mix, the difference is between 17 and 18 psi is 4°. At 17 psi your boiling point would be 267° and at 18 psi, it would be 271°, WELL above your operating temperature.

Wow, who pissed in your cheerios? Or is it just show up the nubies with your vast knowledge? He said "if you're looking at the car from the front end underneath it kinda to the left of the motor", which means you are standing and looking at the car from the front end. Sorry that is so difficult for your to interpret. This is a board to help people, not smack them down to make yourself feel good!

well - Mr STINKMAN - let's take a look at EXACTLY what was actually written -

THIS is what the OP wrote:
if you're looking at the car from the front end underneath it -
I interpret this as being under the car - looking up at the motor - for a leak -
which would be a VERY logical position to be in -

SO - if you were under the car - on your back - HEAD-first - LOGICAL -
LEFT OF THE MOTOR would be towards the DRIVER SIDE of the car -

OR if you were under the car - on your back - FEET-first - not as logical -
LEFT OF THE MOTOR would be towards the PASSENGER SIDE of the car -

YOU - on the other hand - interpret this differently -
YOU completely ignored the word UNDERNEATH -
and added the the word STANDING - which changes the entire statement -

SO - Mr STINKMAN - depending on INTERPRETATION -
the leak could be on either side of the car -

MY point was to CLARIFY the situation - and HELP the OP find and fix the problem -

WHAT WAS YOUR POINT?
did your little rant HELP the OP find or fix the leak?
did it make YOU feel good?

This is a board to help people, not smack them down to make yourself feel good!
