I've read a bunch of posts on the oil cooler leaking . I just wanted to know if you had to replace the oil cooler or can it be reused ? I f I can reuse it What type of sealant should I use ? thanks

nope it has to be replaced I paid 1000$ little over a year ago on my 98 500 parts 500 labor

I thought I read that its just the sealant that breaks down which causes the leak? So if thats the case couldnt you just re-do the rtv to fix it? But on the same note, youre doing all this work to get to it, why not change it so you never have to deal with it actually goin bad. I think the part is in the mid- high $200 range.

I bought my oil cooler kit for $330 Shipped from ebay. Original GM Part which is build much better than whats installed in the car from the factory. The kit consists of 1 Oil cooler, 1 Oil cooler cover plate, 2 new banjo bolts for the cooler, 4 washers for the banjo bolts, 4 coolant bridge seals and a Tube of GM engine sealant. I just replaced mine yesterday, been leaking for a year. It's not something you want to do twice. Took me a good part of 5 hours to replace it start to finish.

The oil cooler cannot be reused. The reason it leaks is core corrosion. Worn out coolant turns acidic and eats the cooler. It can't be repaired.

The updated coolers are of a different construction and resist this corrosion better. They will still fail if the coolant isn't change according to schedule so remember that.

I don't know if they're cheaper but Saturn and Saab use the same V6. Check the price of their coolers.
