An earlier thread on ExxonMobil's obscene profits got me thinking about other companies I refuse to give my business to. On the other hand, I'm a loyal customer to companies who consistently deliver good service and/or products. I don't expect everybody to agree with my choices, but then again, the discussion is why we come to the forums. So here goes:

The Likes:

Target — I love Tarjay and probably do more than 75% of my shopping there. Compared to Wal-Mart and K-Mart, the stores on the whole are much cleaner, less cluttered, and there's not much difference in prices. I actually worked at Target over a Christmas season a couple of years ago and was afraid I'd discover some ugly underbelly, but I found they treat employees well (at least at the store where I worked).

Southwest Airliines — I used to travel regularly on business and did most of it on Southwest. Air travel has become such an unpleasant experience, but the vast majority of Southwest employees I've encountered are friendly and professional. I don't think I've ever encountered a Southwest employee who was truly rude, something I can't say for any other airline. And their frequent flyer program is actually useable. The only good thing about all my business trips was I got to fly free multiple times on personal ones.

In and Out Burger — I miss In and Out (I think the closest one is in Redding, CA). They drew huge crowds when they came to Phoenix, and I always make one or two trips to In and Out when I've go back to Arizona for a visit. Love those fries, the burger buns, and the fast, friendly service.

Starbucks — Yeah, yeah, they're taking over the world, but I like the coffee. And again, I've found most of the baristas to be friendly and efficient.

FedEx — Does anybody else remember the commercial with the fast-talking guy? (PeteryoudidabangupjobI'mputtingyouinchargeofPittsburgh PittsburghperfectPeterthatswhyIpickPittsburghPeterMayIcallyouPete?) I liked FedEx way before I absolutely, positively had to ship something overnight. They've always been reliable and when they've messed up (a computer moniter got smashed), they made it right. When I sell something on eBay, I usually ship FedEx Ground, which is often cheaper than UPS.

Honda — This being a Cadillac forum, I expect this one to draw some flames, but I had a '95 and then a '99 Accord, and I drove them 57,000 and 75,000 miles without a problem. Circumstances forced me to sell my '99, and my niece has a very nice first car. I admire Honda engineering; their four-cylinder engines are as smooth and powerful as most other car's V-6 engines. I'd love to see Honda build a V-8. I also like that Honda has built cars in Ohio for 20+ years and also does a good deal of design and development in the U.S. As far as I was concerned, my Accords were American cars.

The Dislikes:

Wal-Mart — Bashing Wal-Mart has become very popular in the past couple of years, but I quit shopping there a long time ago. Mostly it was because their stores were so cluttered I couldn't find anything, and in some cases, the stores were just plain dirty. Were Mr. Sam still alive, he would not approve. I also don't think he would approve of how the ruthless the company has become towards its employees and suppliers. When full-time employees still qualify for food stamps, but not health insurance, something's wrong.

ExxonMobil — I don't care for Big Oil period, but these guys are the fattest of the fat cats.

Microsoft — Fair disclosure here, I've been a Mac user for 15 years. Windows XP looks much better than previous versions, but Windows still drives me crazy when I'm trying to find or move files. I use Mac versions of Word and Excel, and I do like them for the most part, but I loath PowerPoint. Some Microsoft features are useful, but their software seems like so much bloatware, automating things I don't want automated (and difficult to turn off).

That's all I can think of for now. It'll be interesting to see what the rest of you think.

Fed Ex Same reason as gdwriter, theyre fast, efficient, and they provide a useful service for a good price.

Sony Best of most things they make, good after sales car (The Sony Centre) and they have reliable products

Coca Cola Just cant help it

Starbucks also i love their stuff, theres one or two or three near my office

Gilette

Dislikes:

McDonald's
IM not sure how they can sell that crap

Porsche Someone once described them well as arse engined Nazi slot cars.

ASDA
(UK division of Wal-Mart) although cheap, its got little else going for it

Waitrose
They are another supermarket chain, i really have issues with the snob value of them. Same as Marks and Spencer

People only buy there for the prestige

Im sure there are others...

Starbucks - Expensive and cluttering our citycapes and now the country side too!!

Microsoft - I don't want service pack number 2. I want the product to be right when I paid $250.00 for it at the store, not 1 1/2 years later!!

GM - It's not Japan's fault your car's didn't sell there, and it's not Japan's fault your cars don't sell here! You've wasted 2 decades blaming other companies for your own mistakes!!

Toys R Us - What toys do you have that Walmart doesn't have?

K-Mart - Put your crap on sale and blow it out, don't just keep taping up the broken boxes and throwing them back on the shelf anywhere they fit!!

Schwinn - You invented the Cruiser, and let others make fortunes selling them. Ditto BMX and Mountain Bikes. Now Walmart sells them right next to the Korean Kents.

Likes:

In and Out - I'll take a number 2 and make it animal style!!

Cracker Barrel - Makes me proud to be a cracker!! Too bad they don't exist in California!! So next best is...

Norm's - Open 24 hours, serves breakfast all day and it's not Denny's!!

Marie Calenders - I need a one of their German Chocolate Pies now!!!

Google - When will you guys stop being innovative already??

Yahoo - No AOL, I won't subscribe because Yahoo is a portal so why do I need your's? Hmmmm... :hmm:

Jetblue - Wow, TV's and for the low low price of...

Arco - Always cheaper than the other brands!!

Starbucks I need my double Mochachino Latte before I function at work!

Krispy Kreme They have the absolute best doughnuts you'll ever find, very light and fluffy.

American Airlines I have tens of thousands of miles saved up on my AA Frequent Flyer card, and I always am greeted with a welcome..

Walmart Not a good place to buy clothes or electronics, but I do enjoy getting a few neccesary items quickly.

Sony The best brand for all things electronic.

Mountain Dew This stuff will keep me hoppin' around the office every morning.

The Scottsdale Fashion Square This may seem ridiculous, but this is the ONLY place I will buy my clothing at. It has everything from Banana Republic to Gucci to Louis Vuitton, but I'm a Neimen Marcus MAN!

Dell I love these computers, they make my life much easier!

Chevron I own Chevron stock + I make money + I don't buy there gasoline = One very happy stockholder!

THE DISLIKES

Exxon Mobil $10,000,000,000 in profit...need I say more?

Toyota They have good quality, but I don't like the styling of their vehicles.

K-Mart As my nephew would say "This is the place for people who can't afford to shop at Walmart!"

I can always edit this list if I forget something I wanted to mention.

Air Jamaica - Reggae music playing as you board the aircraft, Blue Mountain Coffee, hot meals and cold Red Stripe beers to wash it all down. Plus friendly and hot flight attendants.

American Airlines and Jet Blue - Best way for me to travel back to the east coast.

Interesting to see the responses. Any wonder why I've become addicted to the forums?

After seeing the responses, I have to add Coca-Cola, Sony, Dell and Krispy Kreme (especially when you get the donughts fresh of the machine; they melt in your mouth). Even though I'm a Mac guy, I'd buy a Dell if I had to use a PC. I directed a video shoot for a client who installed some automated material handling equipment in one of their plants, and their speed and efficiency is impressive.

I'm too broke to shop at a place like Scottsdale Fashion Square, but since I do like name brands, I go to the outlet mall between Portland and Salem, where I can get Gap, Calvin Klein, etc.

One more company I like: Boeing. They've had their ups and downs in terms of management and financial results, but their aircraft design and engineering is impeccable. One nice thing about flying Southwest is I always know I'll be on a 737 and not some dinky regional jet (which is only marginally better than the turboprops). My dad was a B-52 crew chief for most of his Air Force career, so I have a soft spot for the BUFF. As the old bumper sticker said, "If it aint Boeing, I aint going!"

First and foremost, I love the company I work for because they take good care of me and my family. Plus, I love the people I work with.

I'm a VP for a large financial services company. Suffice to say that all of you have heard of it, but I don't want to mention it. Anonymity is precious.

I also like the great American companies that are known for innovation, great products, or great service. Many have already been mentioned:
  • Apple
  • Microsoft
  • Intel
  • IBM
  • Boeing
  • Walt Disney
  • Yahoo
  • GE
  • Harley Davidson
  • I also like Coke and Starbucks because I am addicted to their products.
Companies I don't admire:

  • Verizon because their workers always seem to cause service outages for cable and power in my township.
  • McDonalds because of garbage products.
  • NYTimes because of garbage news.
Also, since I am a capitalist pig, I generally like any company that made me a lot of money in the stock market, including Exxon Mobil and Valero (very rich oil companies). People have been very critical of these companies and perhaps it is justified. However, they have been good for my family.

Disney....Disney....
Walt Disney I admire. He was a pioneer.
Disney the company? No. Not for me
I have three children, when they were younger, they all loved Disney films. And of course no trip to the Metrocentre was complete without a rip to the Disney store. Some of the items that they sell are rediculously overpirced.
£35 for a stuffed toy that probably cost £1 to make in a chinese sweatshop. I dont liek it one bit. Not all parents can afford such things. Especially in my area, which although i live in a nice aprt of it, is a low income area for working class families.
Children want Disney toys because of advertising and just visiting the stores. Parents cant always afford them. Leading to disappointment on the child's side, and also disappointment on the parents side because they cannot afford to buy their child something they want.
Its not just Disney, i jsut think their prices are beyond belief for what you get. Other companies do this, mainly McDonalds they make kids want happy meals, but thats lsightly different, and every toy company on the market. But for me the epitomy of this is Disney.

In high school I went on a field trip to USC. While there we saw the Pepsie Taste Test going on. i got in line and when it was my turn for the blind test when asked which one I liked best I said; "This one, the Coke." as I held up the plain cup. (yes, I was a smart-alec teenager! I could tell the difference between the two) The student administering the test was a bit perplexed or perturbed and said; "It's not labeled, how can you know?" I just smiled at him, pointed at the Coke and said; "I like Coke better."

I need Verizon! I haven't had a problem with them in the past, and they answer my questions if I have any.

Also, since I am a capitalist pig, I generally like any company that made me a lot of money in the stock market, including Exxon Mobil and Valero (very rich oil companies).

You Pig, stop stealing my money :D! Just a note, but Valero isn't an oil company, it's an energy company.

I like Disney mostly because of the experiences we had at Disney World.

We stayed at one of their deluxe resorts. Top quality. Top Service. Everything was first rate. The amusement parks were awesome (EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, etc.) Everything was perfect. The kids had a great time.

Honestly, I'm not really sure about Disney movies or toys. I could take 'em or leave 'em...

By the way, Disney owns ESPN as well. ESPN is one of the few channels I actually watch nowadays.

Hi Speedy:

Next time they answer your questions, could you please tell your Verizon friends to take it easy when they lay fiber optic cable???

Everytime they lay cable, half our township goes without power, cable tv, the internet and phone service for days.

:)

You're right about Valero. It is an energy company.

Food

Likes - Taco Bell, Burger King, Arbys, Wendys, Red Lobster, Popeyes, Sonic, and some others...

Dislikes - McDonalds (I've never eaten there after I saw how they made chicken mcnuggets in Supersize Me), Starbucks (http://www.snopes.com/rumors/starbuck.htm), and KFC, because their chicked is always so dry and tasteless (compared to Popeyes...)

Auto

Likes - Honda (for being so damn good at what they do), Audi (for being so out there, yet so cool at the same time), Cadillac (do I really need to explain?), Hyundai (for trying so hard to be so good, and for helping out southerners by building the most advanced auto plant in Alabama...), and Mazda for designing the Mazda3 and the RX series...

Dislike - MB & BMW (for being so unreliable and so unoriginal nowadays), Lexus (for having such damn good cars with such mediocre styling), Kia (for making such crappy cars), Ford (for not letting their designers unleash their full potential on everything and for having mercury around still AND for starving lincoln of good product), DCX (do i need to explain this one?)

Stores

Likes - Target (for being so clean and organized), Best Buy (for having everything you could want), and Amazon (for being so cool and having everything), Ralph Lauren Outlet Stores (I'm a POLO whore:crying: )

Dislikes - Walmart/Kmart (no need for explanation here...), Old Navy/Abercrombie/Aeropostle (for being so "trendy";) ), Dillards (for being such a ripoff), Alltel (for being such an awful company)

Gas

Likes - Shell & Exxon (they're the only ones that have diesel, and they have nice new pumps)

Dislikes - BP (for trying to act so consumer friendly when we all know they're just another gas company - at least Shell and Exxon KNOW they're evil and don't try to hide it...) and all of those cheap no-name gas stations too...

Walmart- When a mother f***ing tire "Expert" tells me I cant put a different size f***ing tire on my f***ing car, just because that size tire is not on the f***ing sticker that is slapped on the f***ing door thanks to Walmarts f***ing insurance, I dont buy mother f***ing tires there ANYMORE. And what if I want to put f***ing 25 inch rims on my f***ing lebaron, how the f**k are they going to put the f***ing 15 inch tires that are printed on the mother f***ing sticker thats on the f***ing door on my f***ing 25 inch rims? But if I take the car and put it on f***ing jackstands in the f***ing parking lot and take the f***ing tires off the car, they will put any f***ing tire I want on it, because there isn't a f***ing sticker that tells them what sized tire is supposed to go on the mother f***ing RIM!!!!! Do I sound f***ing nuts :cookoo: ???? Ok I am done.

Old Navy, their commercials straight up PISS ME OFF.

A agree with about 99% of what GDWriter initially posted. That pretty much sums it up for me, very well done!

But I'll add two more companies I don't like: Dominos and Little Caesar's. Both owners screwed up my favorite baseball team. I eat at Papa John's now.
