Hey guys it's me again!

Been having a little trouble with my car so I finally broke down and took it to the dealership and had a diagnostic test run. Came back that I need a coil pack there is a misfire in cylinder 4. The dealership wants $1300.00 out the door for the work. They mentioned I also need new spark plugs all the way through. I just had the plugs changed about 2 years ago I wouldn't think I needed them all the way through but that's what they say. Also, they said the coil pack alone is $640.00 through Cadillac. $1300 is alot to me I was wondering if I bought the aftermarket part would it be fine or should I get the OEM part and let them do the work as well. Please someone let me know. Also, how hard is it to put on?

Re: Coil Pack Cadillac Deville Bank 1

If you get the coil pack from rockauto the AC Delco is about $230 and since your misfire is cylinder 4 (front bank close to the radiator) you are in luck. They are easy to replace yourself. Did mine in less than 20 min and I'm no pro mechanic, just an average car owner. Also the coils are interchangeable between the front and the back (I know this thanks to this forum and from experience) the only difference between them is the colour. I think you can get the Delphi coil packs also they are cheaper and should be as good as the AC Delco (I think someone here said they are the OEM for the AC Delco). You can save yourself least a $1000 by doing it yourself. The only tool you will need is a 10mm socket and drive and a drive extension.

Re: Coil Pack Cadillac Deville Bank 1

Thanks guys for the help. I'm going to the dealership at lunch to pick it up and tell them thanks but no thanks I'll handle it myself. I appreciate the advice. Quick question they advised me to replace all plugs but as mentioned earlier I just replaced them about 2 years ago and they are rated for 100K miles. Should I replace them all or just leave them and replace only the coil pack?

If you wanna stick with OEM coil packs i suggest you to order from rockauto.com for both coil packs you will be looking at $470 minus shipping. As far as plugs $5 a plug, so $40. Now were up to $510 minus shipping. I would also suggest you to do the front yourself (coil pack and spark plugs) then take it to cadillac and let them do the rear side. The rear side is darn near impossible to do without alot of patience, and swearing lol. All in all your looking at about $540 in parts, and then probably 2hrs of labor for the rear to be complete via dealership. Maybe $800 total, then your saving over $500. Just my little input. Im not sure as to which side cylinder 4 is on. But if its on the front of the motor i would buy 1 spark plug, swap it out. If that does not work then replace the entire coil pack. I strongly believe its a bad plug. Usually when a coil pack fails, you will get the P0300 (random misfire).

these parts are very reliable - and rarely go bad -
but they DO go bad sometimes -

if you really want to save money -
I have no problem suggesting a good used coil cassette -

if you have a junk yard close - try that -
ALL 2000 to 2004 Northstar powered Cadillacs use the same coils -

ebay is also a good choice -
here is one for $68 including shipping -

Elroy,

With sincerity, please do not take this advice from renaldo. Do NOT take it to dealer! They are ripping people off at those prices.

The rear cassette is not that difficult. And, if as you stated the plugs are only half used then try the new cassette on the front. If this resolves the misfire then you are done for the time being. If it is the plug, easy enough to remove the cassette and change the plug(s).

----------

One more thing,

Regarding a P0300 DTC;

This is a generic code for severe/random misfire. It does not indicate which cylinder is affected. One needs a scan tool or Tech 2 to retrieve the more detailed code I. E. P0301, P0302, P0303 etc. indicating cylinder 1, 2 , 3 and so on.

I'd leave the plugs. Advising you to replace them is just standard practice to make more money and cover all the bases.

Check online for after market coil pack I changed mine on my 97 DeVille. Easy to remove and install. Mark your wires first and double check your work. The coil pack is marked for each cylinder. If your plugs look good leave them. I would look into new wires first BEFORE the coil pack, could just be the wires.
Coil Pack I think was like $60.00
Plugs and wires $125.00
Total $185.00
Good Luck

starting with the 2000 Northstar motor -
lots of changes were made both internally and externally -

no more ignition wires - just a single coil cassette for each bank -
