Hello All

Over the summer I began to have issues with my 2016 Escalade ESV hood and roof paint fadung. There is currently a class action lawsuit underway against GM for this issue that includes '15 to '19 Silverado/Sierra, Taho/Yukon, and Suburban/Yukno XL vehicles. Unfortunately the Escalades were not included. However, efforts are being made to file a class action suit that just covers the Escalades.

The same firms that filed the other lawsuit are already going to file the one for the Escalades. They are just looking for an Escalade owner in a state other than mine (KY, which they said is not a state that's very favorable to these type of cases) to file the suit. Are you an Escalade owner with this problem or an attorney?

I am an Escalade owner who is an attorney. I thought about bringing this lawsuit when I heard from other owners that they were having problems with paint, in particular on the hood. My truck’s hood is not great. Took a ton of work with clay, wax and ceramic coating for me to get my truck’s hood into decent shape.

The paint issue on an Escalade is especially painful.

One, it’s a high line vehicle you’d not expect to have a failure on its finish. It’s even more frustrating to see it occur on past generations and continually overlooked.

Two, this vehicle is huge. The costs are double if not triple of a respray on a sedan because the panels require more prep, supplies, paint and polish. Getting these huge panels back to Cadillac standards is a massive financial undertaking.

GM will duck this one as long as possible due to the cataclysmic costs associated with the repairs.

What state are you in?

I’m in CA, I was introduced to the paint debacle in 2016 as the dash cracked and beautiful paint on our 08 YXL Denali began to disintegrate before our eyes. Initially it was the hood, then the roof. The hood & part of the roof were professionally resprayed before it was sold two plus years ago.

The 09 Escalade Platinum purchased 2020 that replaced the YXL is Polar opposite in paint quality and dash quality. Obviously the leather dash was sourced from Dräxlmaier, but the condition of the 09 Escalade factory paint compared to the 08 YXL Denali was night and day.

To this day, the 12 year old Escalade paint is phenomenal and shames the paper thin paint on the YXL that literally evaporated it’s clear coat back in 2016.

2016 Escalade ESV Black. Hood and Roof are terrible!!! Rest of the vehicle is impeccable amd well taken care of. Are we making any headway on this or just talking about it. What can we do if anything?
I see Tahoe’s, Yukon’s and Escalade’s around Houston and the hoods and roofs look terrible. I mostly see this on 2015-2017 Escalades. I was wondering if this happens to other colors as well. I don’t think GM is going to do anything out of warranty. We would figure they want there trucks to look good on the road. Could this have been prevented by waxing your truck every 3-6 months or is it going to happen no matter what?

I have this issue. Paint looks like it is horribly scratched. I have heard a few GM owners point it out and tell me about the issue they had on their hood and roof. Some said it was an issue with the clear coat that GM was using. I have a 2015 escalade Premium. Live in Vegas with no snow and limited water issues.

I'm in S, Florida with a 2016 Escalade Platinum in Grey, issues started 1-1/2 years ago and now the hood and roof are gone. Took to my local dealership and complained. GM offered $387....doesn't even cover the the actual cost of the paint. I will be taking it to a body shop for repaint, I will keep another 2 years, only has 58K miles.

2016 Platinum ESV in Houston, Glad I put a bra on it. LOL. $1200 to paint the hood. This vehicle has been such a disappointment. Collapsed lifters at 50K. Spent $6500 for a rebuild and new camshaft. Leveling system works intermittently. Back up camera is hit or miss. Parking sensors only work after a car wash, otherwise the brakes lock up for no reason backing down the driveway. Sunroof motor failed. My first $100K vehicle (this one) had more issues than my first $6500 car I bought in college. Getting the Grand Wagoneer L this summer. Cadillac is crap.

Sorry to hear that! Usually I would never buy a vehicle the first year it came out nor second. What I realized is when it comes to Escalade the < 3rd year is probably the one to get. Think of the 1999-2000 which in early 2001 the 2002-2006 body came out which left the 1999-2000 in the 90’s. Now when the 2002 came out it didn’t have XM nor Navigation and the tech was the same as the 1999. Then the 2003 came out and wow what a difference which included navigation, revised seats/cluster, 1st ESV with 2nd row captains, XM and was 500 pounds lighter due to light weight wiring. Then there was my favorite gen. the 2007-2014 which was one of the most beautiful models to date, especially the platinum which the < 2009 year was the one to get because it had the PIAA led lights and the non-platinum came with magnetic ride. The 2010-2014 had DOD & usb connection for music which was a game changer for IPOD & USB flash devices and no more burning MP3 CD. Now the early 2015 had the 6-speed, old crest, non-360 camera, w/o CarPlay & A.A., outdated wireless charger & many other things. The 2015i, 2015 & 2016 had major problems with the suspension being stiff because the control arms was aluminum instead of steel, sonic boom, flaky 8-speed and GM had to do many buybacks because of lemons. The 2018-2020 was the best with the 10-speed, steel control arms and several updates to the point that the 2023 is not a far cry from the 2018-2020. The 2015-2020 was the last Escalade to be built on the truck 1500 frame which is more solid than the current gen. Some of the 2017 Escalades where also great with the addition of the HDMI port, camera mirror & many issues was resolved.

I agree with you on that. Never again will I buy a 1st year run on a vehicle especially in this modern tech day. Bought a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in March of 2013 when they redesigned that vehicle. The dealer was so excited cause mine was the first time they got to see a Hemi with the new ZF 8 speed transmission. They had plenty of experience with the V6 300/Chargers and the owner was only ordering V6's for the JGC's they put in their inventory.

Got the vehicle only for the trucking company who delivered it breaking the shifter since they didn't know how to use it. Within the 1st year the Uconnect system was glitchy ASF and had to be replaced twice. The system still never worked the way it was supposed to after multiple software updates, but as long as I didn't have an SD card in the system, I was good to go. There were multiple TSB's within that first year I had to bring the vehicle in for, so I was becoming a regular at the dealer.

After my divorce in 17, my ex kept the vehicle and I guess the vehicle wasn't happy it didn't stay with me since things went horribly wrong from there. She started having electrical issues and ended up with the headlight LED strip no longer working. The air suspension gave out and since it was out of warranty, I read it could cost up to $4k to repair. Her new man is "mechanic" and added an exhaust system to it, disabled the air suspension to perm lower the vehicle, stupid since it was built and equipped as an off-roading vehicle, and according to my kids the engine blew on it.

When I got my Chevy Volt, I made sure to avoid the first year builds and had very little issues with it, got the last year Acadia before they switched over to the new design and had no issues with that vehicle, and onto the Cadillac's avoiding the 1st year builds for the Escalade and CT6.

Even the 3rd year for the CT-6 was the one to get. I won’t do first nor second year no more.

I have a 2016 CT6 and have the same issue. I thought it was just the coating Cadillac talked me into buying, but when I went to put in a claim, they said it was the paint itself and the coating was still intact. They said GM had problems with the paint process they used. It doesn’t look like the CT6 is included in the class action suit. Does anyone know if that has changed?
