Okay, this was written by my late Mother, Rebecca Lita Block.
January 26 1915 - 4th-of-July 1995. (80). It's Copywrited to me.

T'WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHANUKKAH ....
and all thru the house,
not a creature was stirring, not even our mouse
The Menorah was set in the window aglow,
and its beams cast out on the new fallen snow!
Though Sandy was sleeping :)nono: ), I'm willing to bet,
that he is dreaming of the presents he'll get :)yup: ),
A new bike, model cars, sports car, a Jeep,
a new watch, some golf clubs some clothes, nuttin cheap!
The goodies 'n gadgets this holiday brings,
are awaited each year by Jewish offsprings...
I was lying in bed, almost asleep,
when the screeching of brakes brought me to my feets!
I peeked out the window as sly as one can,
and right then I saw him..." THE CHANUKKAH MAN " !!:)
now, the Chanukah Man is known to both girls and boys,
as the one who's responsible for the Caddies & the Toys ! ;)
He travels all over with stuff in his sack,
but instead of a sled, he drives a new Cadillac !
He got out of his Caddy, still beaming with pride,
from the bargains he'd gotten on New York's Lower East Side.
There were games, toys and clothes, a frisky new puppy and even a bunny,
and of course, best of all, the Chanukkah MONEY!
He glanced at his car, as he turned on his heels,
and smugly admired his chrome plated wheels.
But, ye must be aware that into a SACK, he cannot get,
MY NEW CADILLAC! He caught me at the window and said,
"So what the hey...I'll just leave in your big driveway" :bouncy:  :woohoo:
He picked up his sack, a converted golf bag,
which he threw on his shoulder, with a grunt & a drag,
marching into the house, he emptied his goods, so
he could refill the sack, with his irons & woods.
Again I could see the pride on his face, as he checked all
the goods, and put them in place.
After munching the chopped liver crackers, and a sip from our bar,
he returned to his car, for he knew that tomorrow he'd have to drive far.
With his Chanukkah chores now outtathe way,
he could head for Maimi, for some warm sun & play.
...as he started his car, I called out "SHALOM" - have a safe trip,
and hurry back home.
and as he drove off, these words came to ear,
"it's no big deal, I go every year" ~
... and I heard him exclaim as he raced outta sight,
Happy Chanukkah to all and to all a
GOOD NIGHT!

That is so great!!!!!! I love it!
Speaking of which, it should be about that time my colligues and myself like to call "Mall Christmas." Ya know when you go to the mall and J.C.Penny, Macy's, Lord and Taylor, and Sears have whipped out the plastic Christmas Trees and the tassles and the entire mall is covered in tinsel and the Santa's Lap thing is partially set up? Haha fun mischief times for me and my pals the Mall Rats that we are! Nothing's funnier than sending a whole nativity scene up the escalator one person at a time.

AAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAHAHHA!!! OMG i would die laughing if i saw that.
Haha you should've seen the faces of some people when they looked down and saw a midget wiseman standing next to them.
Oh man i can only imagine. I'd just die laughing.
"" whipped out the plastic Christmas Trees ""

Pretty bad, BUT not nearly as bad as the white-plastic Chanukkah Menorahs with orange Christmas bulbs screwed into the arms of the Menorah. I mean THAT is just wicked bad. White plastic > yeeech. They look like consolation prizes at a carnival fair's bean bag toss !!

Reminds me of the manikins, when i was about 16 i had a summer job in a department store, which was in the OLD SCHOOL and remained closed on Mondays for shopfloor preparation, and it was my job to empty the trucks, take things to various floors, at the time i was dating one of the girls who worked in ladieswear.

The guys from the loading dock used to goof around with these girls all the time, we used to get the manikins, and put them in funny positions, like touching another manikins arse, turn their hands upover and put pennies in them, or put them in the "Bruce Forsyth" position

Like this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41188000/jpg/_41188737_dudek8.jpg

We would have been fired had we been caught, but ti was so funny seeing the girls come in on the tuesday mmorning and see the manikins in the windows in rediculous positions!

My Mom was small 5 foor 1 inch. She and others were stuffed into garbage cans, with holes punched in the bottom and loaded onto a garbage trunk that carried them past check points & out of Germany. That's how she got out. Larger children were left behind to be gassed. When she finally got out of Mexico & into America (New Mexico) she'd beg for food, or go into garbage cans to find food. When she got a job as a maid, those people fed her.

I don't know the accepted Jewish outlook regarding the Messiah - like I said I am not real religious, just a little.

Regarding Greandparents. I had none. They were gassed in Germany, all but one, that was shot trying to escape. I have no idea, nor feelings of what culture it is and/or related feeling are for grandparents. Void. Blank. Empty.
My Grandmother was about 5' 1" and her mother (who I was also privileged to know) was 4' 10" but they both were very tall on the inside!

A friend of mine survived the Holocaust. His Father and older brother were able to get out of Germany just before the war started. They made it to either China or the Philippines. The rest of the family got stuck, their passports were confiscated. All Jewish males age 15 and older were forced into labor camps. My friend was sick and in the hospital when he turned 15, his twin brother was inducted. His Mother paid the doctor to keep him in a little longer so that he could get well, stronger. When he was strong enough, his Mother told him to run. He narrowly made it passed the German border into Czechoslovakia. The family was able to get two of his younger sisters out of the country over to GB with friends. His mother, twin brother and other sisters were killed.

A few days after he crossed the border the Germans invaded Czechoslovakia. He was smuggled over to Italy by the underground where he was arrested and thrown into a concentration camp. His life was spared there because the Italians were not cooperating with the Germans in annihilating the Jews, there were too many Jews in government and other places of power and influence for that to happen. He stayed there until Italy capitulated and just before the Allies liberated the camp the inmates were given a choice to stay and wait for liberators or go free on their own.

My friend chose to leave the camp with some others and head for the front to be liberated faster (they were hungry). They got close to the front but were picked up by Italian resistance. My friend could only speak German so the resistance thought he was a deserting soldier and they were going to shoot him. He tried to tell them he was Jewish but they didn’t understand. On his knees with a pistol to his head he began to pray in Hebrew. The leader of the resistance was Jewish and heard the prayer and stopped the execution just in time!

He met and married a nice Italian Catholic and moved back to Germany after the war. Being Jews they were favored to try and make up for the atrocities but there was too much pain there for him. Most of his family was killed, the rest ended up immigrating to America.

I was at a talk last year with my younger son, by a Mr. Leon Greenman. He survived Auschwitz. He was an English Jew, born in whitechapel in 1910, His paternal grandparents were Dutch, and he moved to Rotterdam with his wife. He was captured by the Nazis in May 1940, and taken to a camp, he fought that he was british, but the Nazis didnt listen, and gassed his wife and child, he had no proof of him being British, and by the time the papers arrived it was too late and they had gassd his family, he was taken out of Auschwitz.
There is obviously much more to his story. He stod in a sports arena for over an hour, at the age of 94, and told his story to about 6 schools of high school children, my wife being athe principal at my sons school, we were obviously invited to watch it. He was a remarkable man, I met himm back at the school, and bought a copy of his book, he signed the copy for me and we exchanged a few words.
I have no direct connection to the war or the holocaust, but this talk was very inspirational for, i think, every 15 year old that saw it.
I found it very touching

Being raised as a Jehovah's Witness, and attending the annual conventions, I have had several opportunities to hear about and actually meet survivors of the Holocaust. What amazes me is that the survivors are superhumanly strong willed. They have watched their families be executed by horrible methods, suffered through atrocities that not even an animal should be subjected to, and have still remained faithful to their religious beliefs and high moral standards. These survivors truly let us know that there is a higher power. They survived to tell their stories, and through it all managed to stay sane, and go on to lead normal productive lives despite mental/physical wounds. Most of these people have passed or are soon to pass away. I hope that as that generation leaves this earth that their determination and legacy does not leave with them and is preserved for generations to come.

Interesting. Alot of survivors here in America are likewise speaking out. There alot of hate groups (KKK, Aryan Nations, New World Order) to name but 3 of at least 6, who are saying it's all a big lie and that it never happened. These people are speaking out to prove it's all truth. The bigger worry is what will happen in 25 years ? It's estimated tht in 10 years they will all be dead. Then What? No "voices" to say YES, it did happen !! No voice to oppose the lies.
Rent the DVD of last years #1 award winning movie "The Pianist" Watch it to the bitter end, when the credits roll, watch the Thank Yous. Look at #3.
It's up to us to remember these things and to pass them on to the next generation. There are many who don't believe it even happened. If we forget the past we are doomed to repeat it.

I haven't seen that movie yet. I take them very personally, it's hard for me to watch. Two that I regard highly are "Schindler's List" and "It's a Beautiful Life". It's very rare for me to get through those without drying my eyes.

I'm not usually a fan of history through tinsel town but those two I think are well done in the fact that they get the message accross.

I'll have to make a point of viewing "The Pianist".
I realize that this thread has moved somewhat off topic and is "stretching the envelope" in regards to forum rules. My thanks to the Moderators and Administrators for your indulgence in allowing it to continue.

Yes thank you, i couldn't agree more.

hey Sandy, what is number 3? is it you or your mom? i must say i admire everyone's parents/ grandparents for what they went through and there isnt a day that goes by that i dont thank God i was born in the US. if those people want to say it was a lie then they need to explain the concentration camps and all the bodies and the pictures! these hate groups are the liars and i dont listen to them. my great-grandparents survived the Holocaust so yeah, it hits me too. i dont know the stories but my grandmother does. Sandy, Kev, and Craig, i would like to thank all of you for the awe inspiring stories of what your parents/ grandparents went through. if only these hate groups would pick up a bible and see that God has his hand on the nation of Israel and will not let them be eliminated from this earth. its all there.

I would also like to thank the moderators for allowing this discussion to continue.

It just shows, that this kind of discussion CAN take place in a friendly, civilised manner, with no arguing, name calling, or other unpleasant things. Its a perfect example of how this place should always be.

People who are from all religions, all backgrounds, empathising, and talking politely and honestly with others on the topic of religion, and not resulting to racism, or in a thread where mention of the Jewish faith is high, senatism.

Sandy, we have groups in the UK that echo the Nazis in the way they move, mainly the British Nationalist Party and the National Front. These people are basically, modern Nazis, and want to get rid of all who arent themselves, and its damn wrong, live and let live is what i say, and im sure ALL here agree.
I, too wish to thank the Administrators/Moderators for allowing us to continue this informative and inspiring conversation. It just goes to show as McCombie said:It just shows, that this kind of discussion CAN take place in a friendly, civilised manner, with no arguing, name calling, or other unpleasant things. To all the participants :Sandy,Kev,McCombie 5, 93fleetwoodlowlow, and myself : we are truly a good example of cooperation, understanding, and harmony. I am honored to be friends with such people.
The hate groups that are spewing doctrine of hate, fail to realize one thing, and that's the fact that there is overwhelming proof that the horrible act of the Holocaust did indeed happen. They deny this because they wish to further their one-sided belief of superiority. I do not tink there is one race or ethnic group that is better than another. We were all created with different skills and ability to showcase GOD's will of a diverse society created in his image.
