I'm deaf on one side so have no directional hearing. This engine is producing a sound that years ago I would associate with a belt or perhaps a bad bearing. A couple of people have listened, but even with two functioning ears they aren't able to pinpoint the source.

Please help get me focused - what's the likely problem, and what are the best solutions?

I would take the belt off and see if everything spins freely. It could be anything there, tensioner, water pump alternator. If all seems well, start it without the belt and see if it is still there.

The belt tensioner bearings seem to make some chirping sounds when the bearing runs dry. (among other things) I recently replace an idler pulley on mine for that reason. The pulley on the tensioner itself has a left-hand threaded bolt, so be aware if you take it apart.
