I went to Wawa tonight and i got this message when i started her up "check service system" then went away after a few seconds. What does that mean? Its been crazy cold out and havent started her in a few days. I'm kind of scared to hear what it means.

-Wes

Edit Car ran fine to Wawa and back.

"Service Ride System" or "Service Charging System", I would assume the first one was more likely or you wont go far with the second.
TIP:
If you missed a message you can always select a non-resettable option (like instant MPG) and press the reset button. It will either say "Monitored Systems OK", or will enumerate all messages displayed in the current ignition cycle.

If it was Service Ride System i would feel something odd driving right? I was talking to Ryan about it and he was saying not to worry about it since they act funny in the cold? I'm pretty sure it said what i stated before because i was like what the hell does that mean? But next time i start her i'll see if that message comes back and see what codes come up. I'm scared right now this car is nothing like owning my Z28 and at least with the Eldo its already broken. But i'm gonna come back and see what it says.

Thanks
-Wes

Whoever Ryan is, tell him no, they DON'T "act funny in the cold".

No, you wouldn't necessarily feel a difference in ride with a ride control message.

Regardless of weather or not it says anything next time you drive it, pull the codes. The message means a code was set, even if the message isn't displayed, the code will be in history.

Ryan with the BMW said this as Ryan a member here. I'll look at the codes today.

For a fact, yes my car did act strange in the cold. I had all kinds of random security messages popping up on mine, my Bose amp made funny noises and I had that annoying aspirator fan noise that never went away even after I replaced the fan. So I'd say the car acted funny in the cold. Most cars I've come across do strange things when it's cold and that's why I said unless it start throwing this message constantly to not worry about it.

The posts above are true - no such message as "Check Service System" or "Service Check System". If it happened once and never returned, then don't worry about it. It might have to do with a weak battery though. If then, cold weather takes part in it.

That could very well be the cause because i havent driven it in a few days and the temp has gone down too 1*F. She did honestly sound like she did not really want to start but did and drove off without a problem. I don't drive her when they salt so she sits in the driveway untill most of it has gone away. I havent had one problem with this car since i took ownership so i'm just gonna see what happens. I am going to do a oil change, TB cleaning and dip the wheels in two weeks time. Then after saving for the 100K mile tune up. Thanks a'lot guys i don't know what i would do with out you.

Codes don't just "come up", you have to pull them. Re read the sticky at the top of the Eldorado/Seville page.

Your charging voltage is pretty high. What is your voltage reading with the engine OFF? Preferably after being off for at least 30 minutes.

Pull the codes!
15.1V is a bit high, anything over 14.8V is starting to become concerning.
More is not better (unless is about money).
Its always ran at around 15 the day i picked her up at the dealer. I'm honestly not to worried about the problem anymore. I'm gonna leave it for a little while fix the problem and i'm selling both Cadillac's and buying a Ford Crown Victoria or restore my Z28. Can't deal with worrying about this car anymore i worry every day about it. Something braking HG's its a great car but i just don't think this is the kind of car i need at the moment. Maybe down the road i'll pick one up when i really do have the funds to fix it when something does go wrong. I'll pull the codes for the hell of it but after that i'm done for a while.

Ever since 11/21/05, when I bought the car, it has shown 14.8 to 15.1 VDC in the DIC for up to 10 minutes after cold start. Voltage then ramps down to a steady 14.4 - 14.5.

I installed a new AC Delco Group 79 battery in late 2002 and will install a new one this spring. Not that I had problems - just that a battery is living on borrowed time when it gets more than 6 years old, especially if the car is parked outside in cold weather.

I think you're overreacting a little bit on selling the car. Most of these cars do have issues, yes. However there are many people here like Sub and Gary who haven't had any major issues with their cars at all. Unless it really starts taking a bit into your wallet just drive it and be happy. As I already told you from about 97k to my wreck at 116k miles all I did to mine was change a transmission mount and did an oil change every 5k miles. Once I fixed everything the car became more reliable than it ever had before.

Just checked my battery. Engine off, ign on, says 11.3 v. Has good battery. Starts fine. Garage is 54f today. Car has always read low voltage with engine off at dash. Running voltage is fine. 13.5-13.8 sometimes 14+ after starting but almost always runs in the 13 range.
