We keep getting the check gas cap warning on our 2000 dhs. We replaced it trwice, once with an aftermarket cap then with a dealer cap. Each time , the warning would go away for a while but it always comes back. Eventually the check engine light comes on as well.
Any ideas?

Pull the DTC's. You probably have a leak in one of the EVAP lines.

Ranger is right on again, to no surprise!

The message check gas cap will always appear before the check engine lamp. You replaced the gas cap with new and still get the message, the next time the ECM runs an evap test it will most likely fail. If you do get a DTC it will be P0440 or P0442. Let us know what sets.

There's a TSB and recall for exactly that problem up into '03. Ask your GM dealer to pull the GM service and recall history for your VIN. Otherwise you're looking at a $400+ tank module PLUS the labor to fix it........The DTC actually sets as a pressure/vacuum sensor trigger.

Diagnostic Codes....hundreds of 'em. P0440 or P0442 series.....fuel tank sensor module. Tough fix. $400+. Look at the top of all these thread pages for "Codes", "Got Codes?", "Codes - How to pull them". You read them from your DIC (Dashboard Information Center). P0452 and 3 are the tank pressure DTC's, and are the warranty triggers for the sensor recall.
