I am in the middle of changing my rear pads and the top caliper pin won't slide (its not rotating easily at all). I can't get the caliper assembly down over the pads. I've never had this happen. How do I fix it?

Re: Changing Read Pads - Top caliper pin problem

Are you talking about #10 not moving?

Spray brake cleaner or penetrating oil around the shaft of the bolt. Work it back and forth until it comes out. The grease in there gets old over time and gunks everything up.
Make sure you clean and re-grease the guides and bolts.

Re: Changing Read Pads - Top caliper pin problem

Thanks, 10 is what I was talking about. I rented the tool the rotate the piston and that is set. I had bought the EBC Red Stuff and these use this sticker on the back of the pad to help them set without noise. Because that top wasn't moving, the side of the caliper kept peeling the sticker as I tried to get it back down. I eventually moved the sticker up a bit so that it couldn't peel it.

I know that the top pin should let the caliper rotate a bit more, but should it also allow me to live it on the axis?

I'm not sure I am understanding you. You put the pads in the caliper and then lower the caliper AND pads over the rotor. Be sure that those twi indentations in the piston face (#14) are at 12:00 & 6:00 so that they line up with the nipples on the back of the pad.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong. 22 is still secure around the rotor. 21 spins up with the pin (10) being the axis. Use the clips (4) to secure the pads inside of 22. Then I swing 21 back down over the pads.

Are you saying that ping 10 should be removed so that I can remove 22 and install everything within 21?

22 is the caliper bracket. The caliper and bracket must be removed together, "loaded" with the pads, and everything slid over the rotor. No other way to do it AFAIK.

So does that mean that I have to take that in (10) out? I can't leave the two big bolts in 22 and load it up in place?

Pin #10 can stay in place if you are only replacing the pads and not removing the rotors. Remove bolt #1. Rotate the caliper up on pin #10. Replace pads. Turn in the piston. Lower the caliper, reinsert and tighten #1.

#10 only gets removed if you need to remove the caliper.

No you don't have to remove 10, unless you need to remove the rotor. You do not have to remove 22 unless you need to remove the rotor, they have nothing to do with changing the pads.
Sounds like 10 is sticking and not allowing full rotation, my PA is the same way. I believe the drivers side I end up taking 10 out to install the pads, have to remove the ebrake cable clamp on the a arm to get it off also.

Actually, you can rotate the caliper up with out removing the bracket to replace the pads only. I don't' recomment it. Remove the caliper, clean the caliper guides and pins. Personally, I pull and clean everything when doing brakes. You will be amazed at how hard and sticky grease can get over time and heat.
Remove 10 and 1 and clean and the holes they go into.
And always flush clean fuild through the system. Get one of these to make your life easier.

Thanks guys. That is how I started doing it, with 10 in. I got worried and didn't want to mess those pads up. I can't remember if I ever did them myself on this car. I think every time they needed replacing it was in the middle of winter so I always took it to a shop.
