Changing Frame(motor) mounts

878 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Destroyer
Alright, i'm dropping the 305 Chevy SBC into this 88 brougham, I get the motor ready to be lowered, only to see the motor mounts aren't the same. (i'm sure Destroyer will have this answer  ) My first question is When I put the 90-92 frame mounts in, will I use the same holes that the 88 olds mounts are in, or will i be moving the mounts to the holes that are more forward on the frame crossmember?
And also, I had this issue with my 70 nova...it was a PITA to change the frame mounts...any suggetions on how to get to the boltheads that are inside the frame...with out dropping the lower half of the suspension?

I'm going to hold off on the mount swap for now until I find out if the owner (who recently was given a FREE SUV from his parents) wants to sell me the car or not (I've got blood, a broken toe, and lots of sweat (I'm in FL) in this car) and if he decides to sell it to me, I'll be using polyurethane mounts for the longevity of the urethane vs the rubber.

But either way, wether it gets rubber or poly, is there an easy way of changing them? I have an impact, so i'm sure it will help, but still, on my nova it was some WEIRD angles to get to them!

Thanks in advance
Destroyer, PM me if you don't mind. I have a few questions.

That's the hard part of using a Chevy engine. I have used many Olds engines because I'm too lazy to take the suspension apart to unbolt the motor mounts properly. I have seen a few swaps where they welded the mounts to the frame. I assume they line up the holes and just weld them. Once you go Chevy you won't want to go back anyway.
I figure I will just drop the lower control arms and then hopefully be able to get to it from there, but I know about the whole chevy thing, my friend had a cutlass with a olds 350 and it was a dog..my 83 carpice wagon had a 305 in it, and it would keep up with his cutlass from a roll. it was odd..but he ended up cracking a head, so guess what we are going to be putting in...a chevy 350 lol.

On my nova it was pretty difficult, but I just used a swivel and an extension and alot , and I mean ALOT of patience. about 1 hr to get both mounts changed out. So I'm gonna just drop the lower control arms and then use the impact to take them out, save myself SOME time. lol. Hopefully this won't be to bad..Has anyone known an olds 350 to have decent HP figures? 400 rwhp, or near there? I've got this 350 chevy and this 305 olds that could use a good rebuild. hmm. I've seen 700_hp pontiac motors. But i dunno about olds.

Thanks for the info..I would weld them, but I was thinking if some older mounts would work...so early style from a monte or something..just a thought I'll give it a look, but it'd be so much easier changing the rubber mounts off the block instead of the whols frame deal...if i can't do that, poly mounts!

Any tips on dropping the control arms lol? looks straight forward, but I'm kinda hesitant with suspension/transmissions.

Thanks again!

I didn't have to relocate the frame mounts on my '91 since it already had a small block Chevy. I know what you are talking about though because I had to do it to my '84 Cutlass when I swapped out the v6 for a 350. It was a PITA but I didn't have to drop any suspension components, I got underneath the car and my buddy loosened the bolts from the top if I remember correctly. Will you have to use the same holes or the other set of holes?, best way to figure it out is with a test fit while the motor mounts are bolted to the engine block. I had to use the "other" holes when I swapped out the Buick V6.
