Change headlights to LED or Xenon?

Hello friends,

My 2016 Cadillac Luxury edition I just purchased only has the standard headlights. Has anyone changed them out to LED or Xenon lights by chance and if so, is it difficult or do I need dealer support? I would like them brighter especially in the area I live. Would the replacing void any warranty?

Best regards,

Many topics on this forum regarding how poor the standard halogen lighting is compared to other vehicles.
If you plan to change to a different style of lamp, the front facia/bumper cover will need to be removed since there is absolutely no room to remove and replace. It's not difficult, maybe 1/2 hour for the first time. There are YouTube videos and instructions available online if you're a DIY person.
I've changed to HID for low beam and LED for high beam, much better in my opinion.
Don't know about voiding any factory warranty.
Good luck!

Hi there, replacing the bulbs with LEDs may influence the warranty only in cases when the vehicle gets damaged by the aftermarket upgrade (in this case - an LED conversion kit) and the dealer can prove that.
You can check more details on that matter in Magnusson Moss warranty act, here is the link to view it.
Now, if you decide to switch to LEDs, make sure you pick the kit that has got a built in CAN-bus module (otherwise you will be getting that 'bulb out' error on regular basis). Here is our catalog of LED conversion kits that will work on your Cadillac:

Hope this helps!

Known problem, bad lights. I sent a message. I sold my '11 Luxury and pulled the HIDs before sold. Will give you a great deal on the whole HIDs for lows and HIRs for highs. After moving to a '15 Premium with factory HIDs, I have to say, my old setup ROCKS! More light than factory HIDs, but those factory HIDs turn and that is cool and help.

Over $200 for setup, I'll sell for $100 just to get rid of them from my garage.

I too have a 2011 Caddy SRX I just purchased in October 2021. This is my 2nd one, the other was totaled by no fault of Miya own. The first one was fine excluding the headlight condensation which they had a recall on, but you had to pay up front on the recall. Couldn’t afford to do that so I never was able to have them repaired. But this 2nd one on the way home after purchasing it, it became dark and I had zero for low beam lights. The dealer replaced the bulbs and it’s the exact same problem. No low beams at dark. Another GMC dealer that I took the car to for a rear toe recall said to me, Cadillac knows there is an issue with these lights and unless there is a NUMBER of owners complaining about this and it gets to the DOT and they are forced to recall then they won’t . So please everyone complaining of your headlight issues FILE a complaint. We have to drive with high beams on at dark which is just as dangerous. So is it your safety or theirs? That isn’t a choice that should have to be made. In the mean time, please be safe!

My wife's 2012 SRX has HORRIBLE ow light performance. She just rides around with her high beams on and no one stops her. That can't be good. I would like to change to LED but I hear that they cause the surrounding to heat considerably, so I should go HID. Do I need a CANBUS? Do I need to wire it directly to the battery? I'm new to researching this again.

Thoughts?

KeithXP,

You need HIDs. I put LEDs (brightest, best review ones) in a year ago and pulled them. WAY to much light up close, still couldn't see father down the road. Fixed NOTHING.

But HIDs, now you are talking. I have a set I pulled from my '11 Luxury before I bought our "new" '15 with factory HIDs now. The '11 with HIDs was just as good (and they are good) as the factory HIDs in our new one. Plus I changed the high beams to HIR as they thow more light . Not that the high NEED more, but the HIRs match the increased light from the HIDs.

I will sell the whole thing (HID bulbs, ballasts, ignitors, canbus) (CANbus thingyins and all so work as DRL), a complete setup for a halogen equipped SRX for $100 just to get rid of it from y overstocked garage) Over $200 in whole setup.

I’ve been struggling with the headlights on our 2012 for a while now. Cadillac wants to replace the assemblies for about $1400. My neighbor is a body guy and had 2 new headlights. We put them in and they weren’t any better so we put the old ones back in. I put in some of the Sylvania super brights and it was a slight improvement for a few weeks but they went dim. I ordered an LED kit from Vleds for $150 and I think they are worse than the originals. I’ve often wondered if there was a difference in brightness between the headlights and the daytime running lights. If maybe they were stuck in daytime. I’m at a loss. I’ve tried new headlights, new bulbs, and LEDs. I’m about ready to just ditch the car. The headlights have never been great but now it’s just getting dangerous to drive at night.

Silverstars and LEDs don't cut it: need to install HID aftermarket bulbs 35W, 45K HIDs and don't look back.

The projectors in the assemble were obviously made for HIDs. HIDs are WAY brighter, so bright that there is a flapper that blocks 1/2 the light (the upper half) so it doesn't blind oncomming traffic. Install halogen like Caddy did from the factory and block 1/2 the light and they SUCK!

Solution is to install HID aftermarket. The arc in the bulb is in the exact spot to be focused down the road just like they should. LEDs don't have the light in the right spot, so the focus is wrong and you get too much light close to the car and end result is no throwing light down the road, so not a reall solution.

I've said it before: LUXURY projectors with aftermarket HID bulbs kick-butt and are really good. Be Nike: Just do it.

Thanks, Cartman, but still very novice to headlight/lighting terminology. I guess I am looking for an HID upgrade, those you posted look to be LED? Which I don't want, according to what I been reading. I just know my low and high beams suck pretty bad, and I would like to upgrade the HID bulbs to something that actually lights up the road. Pardon my ignorance on this matter, give me something mechanical to fix, no issues, make me choose which light and I am lost lol.

DS2 is the HID bulb, unless you do have the halogen style but you posted earlier

"What specific bulb did you guys use for the HID low beams? I am very unimpressed with the ones on my Performance model. I think those are HID's, they are the self leveling type."
Are you sure the lights are aimed correctly?
If you do have halogen, H1 is the bulb for low beam and 9005 for high beam.
I had halogen but upgraded to HID and that was a big improvement.

From what I have been reading, I would rather keep the HID's and not go LED. Seems the consensus is that the LED's do not have the light output the HID's do. I had just put new assemblies on last year through warranty, from yellowing on the outside. I am just not sure I want to spend the money to change the assemblies. I just need better bulbs I think.

I did have to re-align the headlights once I got the car back from the headlight change as they were pointed almost straight down. I don't drive a lot at night but when I do, I want to be able to see and be safe to other motorists.

There are aftermarket headlight assemblies on ebay. can i buy a pair of those? or can you provide a link to a pair?
dealer wants $1200 to replace both. He says the new oem are different (halogens) but i have not researched it. I have a 2013 halogen SRx the drivers side is dim but the passenger side seems ok. The dealer checked all connections and said everything else is ok. Ps. Im afraid to purchase just the bulb conversion and not the entire headlight

There are ebay aftermarket halogen headlight assemblies but do not include bulbs. Your choice to upgrade to HID of stay with stock halogen. Keep in mind the front bumper will need to be removed, search on how to remove it, very easy to do.
A good body shop can do it if you're not comfortable doing it, probably cheaper than a dealer too. Remember to aim any new headlight assembly properly.
Good luck with your decision.
