Well I thought I should post this to see if anyone here can shed some light on a problem that I am having. The car is still under warranty, and they have already replaced the main fuse block in the trunk above the battery. But I am still experiencing the same problem, which is, that power goes out in the center console. So I no longer have control of A/C, but if the heater was on when it goes out I still get heat. The heated seat controls also go dead and the radio too. One time I disconnected the battery for a minute or two and when reconnected it all worked again. But the next time it happened that tactic did not resolve the situation. Also it can come and go at will, mind you it is getting worse, and when it goes out it is not coming back on until the car sits for awhile and we then go to use it again. I am on a bit of a vacation between Christmas and New Years and am no where near a dealership. But on the way here the weather was to say the least not good and the windows started fogging up and the console went out so I had no control of the fan to de-fog the windshield it was not a great situation to be in. I had to open windows and clear the air but that also let in the rain and crappy weather in at the same time. But when I get home I will be taking it in and would like to know what is going on when I get there.

Well that is my problem and I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and what was the result and what needed to be repaired. Or if others have ideas as to what the culprit is I would love to know. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas on the subject. And Happy New Year to all. :D

Had a similar problem with our 2008 when it was a couple of months old except the entire center stack went out and stayed out. They replaced the radio (non-nav) and everything has been fine ever since. Apparently the electronics in the radio unit control more than the radio itself. Hope this helps.

Mine is also a 2008 non-nav system. Evidently they have tried to re-flash the radio but the problem persists. Thanks! Your reply backs up exactly what I was thinking. It would be interesting to see if others have also had the same thing with the same results. :D

I have a '10 and have recently noticed that the centre stack "blinks" off for a few seconds and then comes back on right after start up. I've had the car for a year and this just started. Although it's only happened a few times, I'm a little concerned it will start to happen more often. Is this how your problem started?

No, mine just went dead while driving and did not come back on until the next startup. Then there have been times when it goes out then comes back within seconds. But now it mostly goes dead and does not come back. Thanks for your reply and I hope yours doesn't start the business. I have no idea what this would cost off warranty and don't want to find out either. :D

This was first on an endless list of issues with my beautiful POS CTS. Back in early 2008, GM was clueless; so my dealer kept my CTS in the shop for two weeks, replaced the integrated center stack 1.) Control Assembly and 2.) non-nav Radio. To date, the problem has not reoccurred.

FWIW, here's some info about the integrated center stack electronics: http://www.sandyblogs.com/techlink/2008/02/integrated-center-stack-ics.html

I had the same problem. My symptom included the Service Airbag light coming on at the same time that the center stack went dead. The dealer tried a few things and had my car for about 1 month total last winter until they ultimately replaced some of the components (radio with nav, LCD screens with temp controls on both sides, etc.). This cleared up the issue for several months, but it started happening again this Fall. I took it to a different dealer, who determined that some of the wire connectors were loose. They reconnected several wires into their plugs, and all has been well since. Electrical gremlins are tough to pinpoint, so you need to find a dealer with a specialist willing to spend the time. Good luck.

I notice that my radio display is blank except for outside temp for several seconds on initial start up. All other functions on the stack are on and operable. Does anyone else have this trait? I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

Thanks for all the replies, that is great! Update is that they have now ordered a center stack for me. That is the control part of the assembly not the radio as some have suggested here. It should be in middle of next week and they will call me to get the car in and replace it. Here is hoping that fixes it. If not I hope it doesn't take until the warranty is over to crap out again. Thanks 928S for the reply. It looks like they are doing the exact same thing for me less the radio. We'll see I guess. It also looks like the dealership cannot make any decisions on it's own everything goes through Cadillac for an OK to replace parts. I just hope they are not just picking the cheap way out and hoping this fixes the issue. I give an update when I get this part done. :D

Well it has been awhile now since my last update. I have been sick as heck for a couple of those weeks so I did not feel well enough to post. So I have had the car in for the center console replacement. It took a week longer than expected to get the center stack in, no problem I was sick and in bed. Then I took it in to get it replaced and got it back that day and everything was working correctly, but after close examination I was not pleased with the fitment of the piece. There were gaps everywhere. And especially where on the right hand side there is a strip of plastic carbon fiber that had a gap to the vent on the right hand side, so large you could see underneath. So I called and took it back in the next day to see if they could make it better. They did make it better but not as nice as it was with the other center stack. What can you do? They said there was a difference between the two center stacks. And there were no adjustments in that area. So I had to accept this and move on.

Well from there I went out to another town in the area to see a friend of mine for unrelated reasons. When on the way home guess what? The radio went dead, and all the lights went out in the center stack. After about a minute it came back on and lasted about 5 minutes and went out again. This continued until I got home I lost count of how many times this happened. I called the dealer and we made another appointment to get the car in. Well it is in there now and they have had it most of the day yesterday and all of today. The service writer called me and asked a few questions. I told them what had happened and that I had been out to the local motorcycle show also, the day after I went to my friends place. On the way back from the show it went out and would not come back on at all. After about a half an hour I pulled over and pulled a fuse that they had pointed out in the trunk above the battery. After replacing the fuse the center stack came back up and did not go out again. When I took it in for service again it was up and running. So they seem to think it is OK since they cannot see anything wrong. I then said there is a problem since it happened to me several times. I hope this is not a case of them not believing me! That was about 3 hours ago so I hope they take it out and it fails for them. And we can got forward with this. One thing I probably should not have done was to let them know I had been online and said that the usual result is the radio has to be replaced before the problem is resolved. The service writer did state in a well meaning way that they can not have the customers telling them what parts to replace. That just would not be right to listen to the customers would it!! I do understand that they have to resolve it the correct way as described by GM I just wish it would appear more like they knew what they are doing. After 4 to 5 visits you would think they should have a handle on it. I am sure that if the vehicle was off warranty they would find the most expensive way to correct it and get it done. So here I sit waiting to hear from them. I really hope they get it to fail because I am getting fed up with all of this.

That is it for now I will let you know the outcome. :D

Vanman,

I guess that I was lucky because the integrated center stack went dead while service techs drove my car. On the other hand, they put more than 500 miles on the odometer during two weeks in the shop (actually, I suspect the Svc. Mgr. "test drives" customer vehicles on his long-distance commute to and from work...nice perk, if not my car...lol).

Here's hoping that your dealer will finally come through with a fix for you.

Well I got the car back today and they want me to drive the car until it happens again. They have cleared all the codes and want me to come back when it fails again. Evidently I shouldn't have pulled they fuse like they suggested. It caused a lot of codes to come up. And they want to see the codes from the failure alone. So here we go again. I took the car out for about 3 hours today to see if it would happen and I could have gone right back to the dealer. But it dd not fail. My wife is getting mad now and figures they should be able to get this done without this kind of back and forth business. She is worried that this will continue until the warranty expires, and then they will want some crazy amount of money to fix it. I must agree to a certain extent and am considering unloading the car for if this is not the only thing buried in the car how much will this car end up costing me? It would be nice to know how much a new radio is if this is in fact the culprit. Anyway, I'll keep everyone updated with the progression of this repair. And the frustration involved.

If you have an on-going issue that is not resolved, the warranty perior should be extened for that issue until it is resolved.

I agree totally but who knows if and when it will re-occur. They will not leave this open forever even thought at the end of 50 years of driving I have never had to replace a radio. And I'll bet this one is minimum $1,000.00 more likely 2 to 3 grand because it has a hard drive and also has control over the center stack. And I figure that is why they don't want to replace it. And that is why I am thinking of getting rid on the car. I don't want a money pit, I just wanted a luxury car that would give a lot of pleasure to drive, worry free. You are supposed to get what you pay for. But I am starting to think that they think if you have the money to buy the car, you have more money to burn, and they want to get their hands on it. It is whether or not you can keep them out of your pockets.

There, I feel better now. I am so frustrated, and disillusioned about this whole affair. It has been going on far to long now and should have been resolved. The wife is fed up with it too. This is no way to treat your customers. Enough said. :D

Well, add me to the list of victims.... '09 CTSV. Same issue as described above: center console dies when the car is turned off. It NEVER died when the car was running. Power was sometimes restored while driving or possibly the next time the key was turned off. Was dead for 3 days this last time before I broke down and took it in. Dealer replaced the center stack for a total of $545. On the way home I stopped for lunch and.. yep- died again. So now I'm rocking a loaner XTS while they figure out WTF is wrong.

Well I never followed up on the result of my dilemma. They replaced the center console twice. That was after the first time in when they replaced the main fuse block behind the battery. After the console was replaced for the second time I was in at least two or three times complaining that it would go off. But they said that they had to see it. Well it was my lucky day when it went out one week before my warranty expired. They ended up replacing the radio as most people here on the forum state too. I am sure that it is expensive and they don't want to pay for it unless they have to. So from they battery to the radio has been replace less the wiring itself. I hope that that isn't damaged. It has been awhile now and all is good.

Maybe you should print up this thread and let them read it. It is quite apparent that the forum knows what is going on maybe they should get with it.

It sounds like the "solution" is to replace the center stack, which is what they did. :(

Alright, well here's the update.

Picked up the car on Thursday after they performed a software update on the console and radio. Wiped out all of my presets, bluetooth, etc. :(

Drove the car on Saturday and it died again. Total of four power cycles; it died on the fourth when I turned the key off, just as before. Took it straight in again. At least this time I got a new CTS. Still f**king hate CUE, but it's the nicest car Caddy offers by far. When the new V comes out, I'll be wanting one badly. Assuming I don't get fed up with this electrical gremlin and trade it in on a Tesla Model S P85+.

Hopefully you won't have electrical gremlins on your Tesla.
