My 97 has factory tape head unit with CD changer in the trunk. Turn the radio on and hit the source button. On mine, hitting the right button will go from radio to tape (and if no tape is in, it will say something like that) and then hit it again and it should go to the CD.
Also, may be the same for yours...when you take the disc cartridge out to load a CD, the label side goes down.
