Any CD reader has an electric motor that spins the disc, one motor that moves the laser and reading sensor assembly across the CD (from center to the outer edge) and some piezo “motor” for fine tune adjustments. These mechanical parts are prone to failure in time. Also the laser and the sensor assembly can fail in time (either laser looses intensity or sensor looses sensitivity or both). Most of the time the mechanical parts are failing first. But should the CD player take consistently longer time to read a CD or maybe not read at all, well that might show a problem with the laser/reader assembly. I had some success with older CD players by increasing the current to the laser (some have an adjustment) but only works for a year or so then you have to increase some more and often until no more increase option. If the CD player has a tendency to read the tracks from the beginning of the CD or the one from the end then is a misalignment.
But first thing I would try is clean the lens.
