With XM Canada radio now available, has anyone tried to get it activated by a dealer? I am interested to know if there is a dealer out there who has done this, and won't give me that "deer-in-the-headlights" blank stare if I ask to get the XM band activated via the Tech2.

If your CTS is already equipped with XM, there is a procedure you need to follow to get signed up. Check the website for this but it involves being on XM channel 1 to get your serial number. You do not need the dealer for this. Thanks, Mike.

It doesn't have factory XM, but I am guessing it is "XM-ready" since it's a 2005 with Bose and the changer. I would need to add an antenna and receiver, I think. A number of people in the States have had the XM band enabled after-the-fact at the dealership, just wondering if anyone north of the border has had it done.

If you get the radiosandmore kit, it comes with detailed instructions for the dealer to activate the XM menu on the head unit. It's also posted on CadillacFAQ, so blank stares or not, it's fully explained. DanDan has done many of these conversions and he said that all the ones he's done did not require activating the XM band display since it's already on from the factory, and detects the tuner via the serial bus. This was also my experience when I did mine. You can do the install yourself and if the option is already turned on, there's no need for a trip to the dealer at all.

The XM service gets activated directly with XM. You can do it on-line or by phone, but you need your radio ID, which is displayed on channel 1. It's also printed on a label on the actual tuner, if you want to write it down prior to the install. Activation only takes about 10 minutes with the radio on and parked outdoors in visible range of the satellite. In Canada, this means about 40 degrees above the horizon, in a Southerly direction.

Canada doesn't have it's own XM satellite. XM simply widened the area that they broadcast to using their two existing geosynchrounous satellites (one off the East coast and one off the West coast), and added Canadian specific channels. Since they basically 'hover' over the equator at a specific longitude, anyone in the footprint can pick up the signal.

Here is what I found out yesterday about Canadian satelite services when attempting to get more info on why Sirius Canada was not putting on Howard Stern on their channel line up as of Jan 2nd.

1/ Both XM and Sirius went in front of the CRTC (like the FCC in the US) and bent over for them and said yes sir, anything you say sir...

2/ As a result of not boycotting the CRTC and just starting up service anyway without permission - we are now held hostage to *Canadian content*. (sigh) There is no legal requirement for American satellite companies to have to make *deals* with the CRTC. (Quite why XM and Sirius did this is a lot of backroom dealing and payoffs I am told. There is nothing in the broadcast act signed 20 years ago that even mentions satellite radio).

3/ One of the ways they have in doing this is that Canadian partners of Sirius (2/3), CBC and Standard Broadcasting upload their programs via satellite to reserved Channels that Sirius has set aside for the Canadian partners.

4/ Next - Sirius (and XM) ship portable radios to Canada that are tuned to Canadian ONLY channel line ups and along with this mix, they throw in the rest of the American content.

5/ Part of the selling point to the CRTC was not just abusing Canadians by jamming up their channel line up with French services, native services and tired old long forgotten Canadian talent like Lightfoot, The Guess Who and crap like this - Sirius USA and XM USA promised that Americans would ALSO be able to hear Canadian music talent down south on some pre-determined %.

Quite why we have to inflict our socialistic nanny state crap on Americans is beyond me. Don't get me wrong - there is a lot of good Canadian music - it's just that you won't hear it because they have not been signed by companies lke BMG or Sony etc who pay big bucks to certain people...

6/ My main beef is that between the CBC and Standard broadcasting ltd. (who used to have Howard on one of their stations, Q107 and STILL owe him money!) They have decide to CONTROL content for what is good for their business. For the CBC they don't want any other "talk radio" other then their channels. The CRTC wins because they tried to fine Stern a few years back and instead fined Q107 over a stupid broadcast where he laid into Quebecers one day. I guess it's payback time for Stern up here from several groups.

7/ XM Canada operates the same as Sirius as far I see with one rather big difference for CTS owners. XM is in part owned by GM! As a Caddie owner - you cannot select the type of service - you MUST have XM - or nothing. If you do select XM, your getting the same rotten deal as Sirius Canada customers. Of course I wouldn't be going on XM anyway as Stern's deal is with Sirius.

8/ I intend to sign up with Sirius USA over the web using a freinds address in the USA (American zip codes only) - have the radio shipped there and they will in turn ship it to me. I will then go back onto their webpage where I can fill in the radio serial numbers and start my service. This radio will be pre-programed to receive the USA Only channels and along with that it comes with a car kit that my radio in the CTS can pick-up and I can hear the broadcasts through the car speakers.

9/ I won't be held hostage to either GM/XM, nor Sirius Canada or the freaking CRTC. I will listen to what I want, when I want, where ever I want!!!

10/ For fixed car radios you are screwed as well as the radio is pre-programmed by GM for XM Canada signals ONLY. This is why Canadian's couldn't get XM signals on 2005 vehicles as GM knew the XM Canada deal was coming. Even when you are on holidays driving through the US - you will still receive the Canadian broadcasts - NOT the US broadcast bands!

10/ Don't get mad - get even.

Heh heh heh - I love a good ol' Friday rant!!! :duck:

The main reason I'm looking at Sirius right now is for Radio Margaritaville - to stay "chilled out" in the face of an election with no viable candidates, CRTC interference in TV, gas prices, etc. Alternately, I am considering XM for the sports. Truthfully, I don't see anything on the US side *only* that I would want (not a Stern fan). Using either a canuck or American receiver, the dealership might still have to do their thing with the Tech 2, but it sounds like most of them are already enabled.

Sounds like no-one has gotten the Canadian XM enabled yet? nobody on the "bleeding edge"?

Excellent deal, previous owner prepaid for XM and the satellite cops haven't figured it out yet. Are the stations any better than the GTA stations?
