Push down on the front of the hood while someone pulls the release. That might help the latches disengage the hood. Let the hood go with your helper still holding the lever out. Your cable might be stretched and not fully pulling the latching mech. That worked for me on my old car.
It's a two person job. One person, inside the car, asserts the hood release. Other person pounds (bangs) on the hood with open hands, so as not to damage or dent the car. This should spring the hood free. It did for the last person, anyway. I remember he was quite surprised.
