We are passing the torch of "most ridiculed currency" on to you, America. For the first time in 31 years, Canada's dollar closed above the once mighty greenback. The Canadian dollar right now is worth $1.0037 US dollars. This is due in part to a failing US economy and a strong Canadian one. Commodity prices are at an all time high, and Canada is a major supplier of these commodities. Too bad everyting is still way too expensive up here...
These are our weapons of mass destruction, you should have used them on Iraq instead of what you're doing now. They do a helluva lot more damaged than Abrams tanks and marines.
ugh... I'm not even going to go into full diatribe mode...
Yes... the Canadian economy has shown marked improvement over the past several years, BUT to say America's economy is "failing" is a stretch.. and that's putting it mildly.
The relative value of one's currency is not directly indicative to the health of one's overall economy. The value of the looney may have shot up as of late but compared to the States, Canada has the purchasing power parity to afford say a plain hamburger compared to America's Big-Mac.
IF America's economy was "failing" as you say, the rest of the world would be in some serious sh*t. Other's may be catching up, but it's still the American dollar that makes the world go round.
Ah the joys of being young, since over 80 percent of what Canada makes is exported to the states, if that economy was in trouble, then it would not take long for Canada to go into the dumper as well, chicken and the egg, now believe it or not, the new contract that GM settled with their union, now has the CAW up in Canada worried, there is no more cost advantage either the dollar or health care, you will now see much more jobs returning back down to the states. Ontario will become what the northeastern states were, a rust belt.
Are you trying to tell me I'm rich!!! I ran over to the junk drawer and got out the jar that had the Loonies and the other strange Canuck coins in it. You mean I can spend them now?
Hey, guys: He's only 19. Someday he'll go back to school and learn how to read and write and not to believe the news media......Don't forget....quite a few Canadians still believe in Sasquatch, gun control, France, Sgt. Preston of the RCMP, and a stiff upper lip. A significant part of his CanCadillacCar was molded/formed Up There, bringing dollars to Canada. How 'bout if we stopped all "foreign aid" to y'all? (Don't screech too loud....) Actually, most of Canada is really beautiful, just not some of the agitators.......
now dont be too hard on our little frozen freind of the north ....he loves his cute little country ...cant argue with that ....i say let him wave his flag ....but uh lets make sure he dont fly it on american soil ....had a neibor do that once ....had to retake his front yard in the name of america ....80 year old canucks dont put up much of a fight ...
sasquatch is real ....who do you think gave birth to celine dion ?
its ok to belive in france , i do , i belive they will still be lilly livered yeller cowards for years to come ...
my ex taught me a stiff upper lip isnt such a bad thing ...works wonders on the ol cylanderhead
speaking of my ex , i belive in gun controll too , remeber kids turn the safety off when she gets a little too cute ...
Well... I wasn't going to bring the age thing up... but thank goodness for submariner to come along and say things I don't.
Even if he wants to automatically believe everything the news tells him... it's painfully obvious that Canada must be lacking serious geography lessons... the last time I checked Mexico was on the same continent... the Peso has always been the "more ridiculed currency," not the canuck chump change. :yup:
BTW - I agree, it is beautiful country up there.... yet despite all that beautiful country to the north, I find it ironic that 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the American border... hmmm...
For some reason now whenever I go out I see some dumb Quebecker out trying to drive... and failing miserably. They CANNOT, for whatever reason, seem to operate a motor vehicle in a sound fashion. One was doing like 90 with two bikes and one of those pod things on the roof of his Saab whatever trying to pass people and realizing that doing 90 with two bikes and a pod thing on the roof was ill-advised to say the least. And don't even talk to me about what they'll do in a traffic circle. Seems they have no idea just how to navigate one...
I actually DO believe in gun control......that's why I use 2 hands for a Colt .45 revolver. (And I do keep 'em all locked in a damned expensive safe.....) Our Canadian detractor said we should use Cadillacs or some such to win the Iraqi (quagmire) war. Remember that USS NEW JERSEY's 18" guns could heave a 3,900 lb. "smart" projectile over 30 miles with scary accuracy. Now, if we compress all our Cadillacs into 18" cylinders, we have a way to make a significant donation to the Iraqis.........(As in engines, there ain't no substitute for cubic inches.)
Oh wise Seawolf, the New Jersey unless it was rebuilt again, only comes with 16 inch guns, not 18 inch, only the Yamato and Musashi came with that size, your navy sure made short work of them, the third of that class when converted to a Aircraft carrier, your submarine ancestors took care of that. Now all Canadians know about that. LOL
Oh my silly friend from the great white yonder.... this is America, like many things... size doesn't matter... it's how you use it. And the Big J is the epitome of that being the most decorated battleship in the US Navy.
While I may have never served, I come from a Navy family. My grandfather was on the New Jersey (one of the few New Jerseans who were actually honored to to serve on her) during her first deployment as the flagship of the mighty Fifth Fleet.
I remember it was a sad day when she was decommissioned for the last time in '91. As cheeky as it may sound, those big battleships were the last of a romantic era in the Navy's history. As advanced and deadly as all those mammoth carriers and svelte submarines are these days, they just don't hold the same panache as 57,000 tons of floating big guns. While the Navy more than got their money out of her she could still be put to productive use rather than just sitting in the Delaware as some relic of a bygone time...
I am glad to hear that she has not been put down, I agree that she would be more of a 'presence' than any Tico cruiser or Arleigh Burke destroyer, and I do have the feeling that 'she' will be brought out of retirement and given that rear turret removal with a missle system in its place. It would still cost less than even 1 destroyer and it would make it more effective as well.
I tell you what is going to be effective, The converted SSBNs that are now SSGN's. They will have the capability to sit off your coast undeteced and launch over 140 Tomahawks at your ass before they even know you are there. Ah Submarines the most cost effective ship in the Navy.
Now that my friends is a viable threat...
 Caddyshack.....Yep !!! ....16"....senior moment. Sorry......QUICK !!!! What's the diameter of a Mk.14/3 steam torpedo ? If I forgot THAT I'd have to turn in my Dolphins.....Unfortunately, I think the remaining BB's are now all marine monuments. A year after I retired in '82 I was offered the job of Command Master Chief in IOWA if I would go active for 4 more. That would have put me aboard right about the time of the forward gun turret explosion. After 24 years of sub service I sort of liked the idea of chasing targets, not necessarily being one.......:yup:, so I declined. Glad I did......Caddyshack, were you around in the '60's, when RCN had 4 or 6 destroyer/frigate types built by GM ? They were painted sort of seafoam blue-green and were quite handsome. We used to work with them out of Halifax and New London, CT. Look in an old Jane's Ships. My last tour as COB was in USS JAMES K. POLK (SSBN/SSN 645) which was converted to SSN for some pretty neat operations during the '80's and '90's. I attended the deactivation in '99. Tear jerker.
The current converted SSBNs now SSGNs have SEAL capability as well.
My first boat the Michican is an SSGN now. Crazy stuff they did to that thing. I am sure they will be doing some neat stuff in the near future.
They did a good job too! They added lots of birthing, extra showers, a new head and of course a bunch of the "good stuff" . Nice! It still has that new sub smell...:bouncy:
STEAM TORPEDO, Jesus I had 48's and I thought they were old. Holy Shit 409 you are a crusty dude! :getaway:
No Submariner409, I do not remember those, but I think there are still two around today, modified again as Command and Control ships, HMCS Iroquois and Huron, not sure though, I was always a great fan of the US Navy, especially when they held firm during the Kamikaze attacks during World War 2, Brave men, you are part of a proud tradition. I was always a Battleship man though, both my grandfathers helped build them during the war. HMS Prince of Wales, and Anson and Howe, my other Grandfather helped build Britains last great warship, the Vanguard, I always wondered what would have happed if the Iowa met the Tirpitz during its Atlantic tour. I am sure the Iowa would have prevailed, but it would have been interesting.
Canadian dollar being high isn't that a spectacular a feat. We still pay on average 24% more for any product than the US, so if our dollar is at parity shouldn't we at least pay the same?
The US dollar has been losing ground to the EURO, and the Canadian dollar is doing better? Compared to whom? IMO the EURO will soon become the currency of choice.
China and India have quit lending money to the US, and then have subsequently been purchasing gold for their treasuries. If there's a recession coming, countries are getting ready for it.
Ok... calm down guys. I didn't mean for my remarks to be so inflammatory. They were supposed to be humorous more than offensive. They weren't based on any serious analysis of either national economy nor were they meant to express any superiority complex on my part. I have to say, the personal attacks are simply immature. Consider this my official apology to the United States of America, but really you guys need to lighten up. Besides, we're all in this together.
EDIT: If it becomes necessary to lock this thread mods, do as you see fit. I didn't want to start a pissing match.
It's been talked about before, and perhaps now that our currencies are at parity, and if they remain so for a while, we can think about combining our currencies and have one dollar. How else are we going to compete against the European economies?
