A friend of a friend keeps bragging that his 1998 Jaguar XJR (385HP Factory Supercharged) will flat out beat my "V"...... are these Jags realy that fast? What do you guys think? Mine is a stock 2004 "V".
My gut, uninformed reaction would be no, but that's merely a guess. I reviewed the new Jags a few months ago (which have more HP/torque than that one) and none of them put down accelaration numbers that were jaw-dropping, to say nothing about better than the V.

He has no shot unless you are a complete novice at shifting. By the time you hit 100 you may not even see him in your rear view mirror.

He's high. :thehand: The 98 XJR is the first one with the supercharged V8; before that it was a supercharged V6. The V8 cars are very fast and very smooth, but they're not dragsters, nor do they handle well. They're very heavy.

I seriously considered a 2002-2003 XJR before I bought the V. The XJR has one of the nicest interiors I've seen, but the car has some drawbacks too. The reason I ended up with the V were:
  • the V had a manual shift
  • the V handled better (Jag felt BIG)
  • the V was noticably faster (Jag felt very powerful, but not super fast)
The one thing you'll want to find out is if he's played with it (the Jag). It's very easy and very cheap to swap out the pulley on that supercharger and ramp up the boost pressure. If he has, there's no way to predict how you'd fair against him. If he's stock, you'll embarrass him (just practice your launches before you race him).

You shouldd blow bly him by over 1 second or more, depending on how far you go.

I found an old press release on the net. Jag said the 98 XJR goes 0-60 in 5.4

That's a press release so I'm sure it's the best time they could find.

The bottom line is the Jag has less power, weighs more and is an automatic.

No contest!!!!!

Austin,

You'll crush him. I'm a former Jag owner and can tell you that it won't be much of a race. The Jags are EXTREMELY massive cars. They ride exceptionally smoothly and are quite stable at high freeway speeds. Nice interiors if you go for the burled wood thing. And for some reason, people are always impressed by the Jag. I still have people ask me if I have my last Jag years after I sold her...

While the can't be beat in terms of prestige-per-dollar, they aren't in the V's class in terms of performance. In the straights OR the twisties. Mid 5's sounds about right. They are just too heavy, even @ the same power levels.

The S-type R is another matter. That thing is a good match for our cars. Much smoother and more silent, but still fast as hell.

No mods are worth the price with the Jags, and there isn't much you can do to up the performance @ a reasonable price.

The XJR won't keep up with the V, though. Put up pink slips and go for it :)

Nope...the 104 is the "trap speed" which is an average of the last 60 feet of the 1/4 mile. Not the speed at the very end of the 1/4.

I have a 2005 CTS-V (no mods except StealthV CAGS eliminator). My wife drives a 2005 Jaguar S-Type R. Both are incredible cars, but the V is quicker.

put the money where the mouth is! did anybody ever think to just take them both out and give them the run they were designed for?

Besides, the person behind the wheel has much to do with the outcome. I beet a viper only because she furiously smoked the tires while I drove away.

I drive my caddy but I had a friend that owned a Ferrari, I say owned because it never left his garage except on the occassional sunny holiday, I cringed in discusst! That's like having a fine thoroughbred and leaving him in the barn.
RUN THE BEAST!

Sometimes know how is better than raw horsepower. Good luck but what's the point of having such machine if you're not going to put the horses down !!!!!

ok even so tho.....8 tenths to not go very much faster

0-100 in 12.8...thats got to put you about 60 feet from the end of the 1/4 so Im assuming the avg is prob 100+108=208/2=104. still thats sounds a little off to me.
