I have a 2003 CTS with approx 53K miles on it. On my way home from work the check gas cap message came on my navigation DIC screen and I hit the OK button. Minutes later the check engine light icon came on the dash but no corresponding engine message in the DIC was displayed. When I got home sure enough the gas cap was loose so I tightenend it back up but now the check engine light will not go off.

Additionally when I run it in my garage at idle in neutral the two fans on the radiator were not spinning. They did begin to spin however when I turned on my AC. When I turned off my AC the radiator fans continued to spin. do you think this is a related symptom or do they run only when the car is in gear or at a higher tempature? The drive home from work was only 8 miles so the car was on maybe 20 minutes maximum.

Do I believe the check engine light was caused by the loose gas cap or should I bring it in for more serious scrutiny for a larger engine issue?

yes a loose gas cap can cause a check engine light...and yes the fans can and will run as the car gets warmer, no matter if you have the AC on your not

Consider your self lucky to have a car that tells you in ain English to check the gas cap. Most other cars will only have the check engine light.

So yes, a loose or faulty gas cap will give you a check engine light. However, once te problem is fixed. It can take a couple hundred miles for the light to go away. Unless you have cleared, which can cost at least $20. Or you could wait until your emissions are due, then the place will find that error. Clear it for you then you would have to go back in a week to have it go through emssions again. Should be free at that point.

since you have an 03 CTS, you can clear it thru your DIC using the F1 & F6 buttons

txbest1980. My DIC doesn't have a F1 and F6. I have the full screen DIC with navigation and not the Orange Font DIC. Is there still a way to clear it?

yes there is. if you can do a search on here you will find out how to do it. just a day or so ago, somebody else that has that unit stated how to do it, but i dont remember exactly what they said you needed to do. or maybe somebody with that nav unit can chime in and tell you how to do it...

OK, holding the upper left Band button and lower left Nav button together for 5 secs and releasing brings you to the diag mode. However I do not recognize the P0128 codes people were speaking of in the forum. I took down an entire list of codes and they were as follows:

*MSM 25739645 1676
*PHN 22692100 5335
