DETROIT – Finalists for the 2004 North American Car and Truck of the Year competition are announced today, with General Motors Corp.’s Cadillac Div. placing an entry in each category. Winners of each award are to be named the North American International Auto Show here next month.

North American Car of the Year finalists are Cadillac XLR; Mazda RX-8 and Toyota Prius.

North American Truck of the Year finalists: Cadillac SRX; Ford F-150 and Nissan Titan.

The North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year are named by a 49-member jury of automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada. The influential North American Car and Truck of the Year awards, first given in 1993, are patterned after the European Car of the Year award.

The previous generation of Ford Motor Co.’s F-150, completely redesigned for ’04, was named the North American Truck of the Year for 1996. Cadillac, with two finalists in the 2004 competition, never has won either award.

Last year’s North American Car of the Year was the Mini Cooper/Cooper S. The 2003 North American Truck of the Year was Volvo Cars’ XC90 cross/utility
