Hi guys, i was told i busted a bearing in the front driver side a while back, time to replace it. I saw used parts for sale online. My question is, whats the difference between, HUB bearings and WHEELS bearings? Or is there NO difference? Just another way to discribe the same part? Please help I have a guy that quotes a "hub" bearing 89.99 BUT a wheel bearing is 300.00?? Please help me out!?? Thanks!

Give us some details on your car. Year? engine? milage?
2005 cts v6 3.6 liter. 21k miles. I hit a cement 2inch wall during consrution, 2 days later had a flat tire. the rim was fine "20'' wheel". Heard rubbing underneath, It now makes a squeeling sound during driving. constantly making that sound. stops as a i turn right only. I replaced the brakes the other day. I feel a rub inside the frotn driver side . Had it looked at they said its a bearing. So as i look for the part online i discovered hub and wheel bearings? Not sure what is what.
Hub/bearing is the hub and the bearings. All you're likely to need is the inner or outer bearing. Tear it down to find out.

Like I said the mechanic at cadillac stated "Bearing" needed to be replaced. What bearing is he refering to was my question? I never knew that there was 2 things in regards to the bearings..

A hub is a hub. It carries the brake rotor and the wheel. It has two bearings inside it that the hub turns on; an inside and an outside bearing. Changing a bearing is a simple fix. About 1/2 hr.

I was quoted the part was 391.00 is that sound correct? I went online saw a hub bearing for sale @89.99 and a wheel bearing @ 300.00/. This is where my confusion lies. I dont know who to trust on these web sites. Thats why i came here :rant2:
The hub/bearing carries the ABS wheel rotation sensor, also. GM lists the part for $349, but it's at GM Parts Direct for $149.00, p/n 12413071.

this is in fact what i need though? If so ill order it now, i just need to know before hand :)
Why would you want to buy the hub/bearing when you can buy just the bearings that fit inside it for 15% of the cost? Parts are sold separately and are also sold as assemblies. Why buy an assembly that you don't need when you can buy a few separate parts for much less? It's the difference between a mechanic and a parts changer.

I dont think ya understood. I dont know what is busted. The hub or the bearings inside. I think its the bearings. None the less, I just dropped it off at the dealer i bought it at an hour ago. So either way it will be done CORRECT. Enough of this guessing game for me. Done worrying lol :alchi:
Buy the whole thing, because, it's all one piece anyway. The hub/bearing can't be taken apart. There are three bolts on the back of you dust/backing plate. Remove the wheel, caliper, rotor, abs sensor cable, then the three bolts. It might be hard to get it off. Rust and stuff. Don't pry on the backing plate. Worst comes to worst, take out the two bolts that hold your strut on, then the one holding your upper control arm, and the two for the lower. Take that to the dealer and get them to do it. That way it will only cost about an hours labor. and the cost of the part. I got mine for 283 Can, so I think that you can find a better deal than 300 US. I get a few good deals so 300 might not be bad.
Oh ya, I know this one broke because of an impact, but you should do both at the same time.
On some GM cars, like the Aztek, this bearing uses three "torque-to-fail" bolts that cannot be used again. New bolts must be installed. I don't know if this is the case here, but the service DVD lists an ambiguous "fastener caution" about the mounting bolts.
