HI all,

While looking for a coolant leak with the motor running I noticed my V1 has some serious harmonic balancer wobble. Since I have to replace the radiator, I'm thinking of doing the harmonic balancer at the same time. Car has 90,000 miles. Would anyone in MD/DC area be willing to lend me the puller and installation tools? I know you can rent them from autozone but there are horror stories about breaking the rental tools and getting stuck. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Please email rmosley at blueliner dot org. Thanks!

Both times I've removed one, I used a rental tool from Autozone or Advance Auto. Just make sure you inspect the tool when they bring it out to you. Assuming it's in good shape (it'll probably be hardly used, based on my experience), if you manage to break it, it's because you're doing something wrong. :) The tool they have is the only type of damper removal tool I've ever seen, so you're unlikely to find someone that has something different in their personal garage.

You've probably already found advice on installing the new balancer. The rental installer tools don't have a long enough bolt to reach the threads on the crank for our motors, so you have to come up with some other way.

I'm gussing one of those nightmare threads was mine, lol? Since you have an LS6, I'm guessing you'll have an easier time than I did. The LS2s seem to be stuck on there tighter. However, my advice would be to make sure you borrow or buy the correct tools. You can try your luck with Autozone, but make sure you have another car for transport in case you have to wait to buy a tool.
