my alternator on my 68 sedan deville 472 is starting to sound pretty rough. anybody have any recommendations on where i should purchase a new unit?

I would highly recommend converting to the Delco 10SI and losing the beast with its mechanical regulator. Much more reliable.

what exactly would be required to convert and does the 10si use a different bracket?

All that is required to convert is the alternator, and the 2 pin connector for it. (available anywhere) Bolts right on. Order the alternator for a: 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix, 8cylinder 5.7L (350R) engine, with air conditioning and with H.B.L.” (H.B.L. = Heated Back Light–meaning rear window defroster) (car info from MAD Electrical)
