Been looking for an Allante

I have been pondering getting an Allante. I have rather extensive experience with 4.1 and 4.5 Caddies of course I understand these are different. I guess what I am curious about is what kind of problems do this things commonly have if any, mechanical, electronic or appearance...etc?

No one named Po Pimp should own an Allante for fear of offending the Allante gods/demons. Good Allante friend Flacko93 swears there is a $2000 initiation fee for joining the Allante fraternity (repair cost after purchase) and he's close.

Appearance--all seem to get parking lot dings

mechanical- plan on >$1000 for ABS remanufacture

electrcal-door swithches, real pull done motors. Quoting Flacko " Allantes either have a slow electrical drain or will".

comfort-Bose speaker/amps =$400-600 repair.

So change name and get hunting, you'll enjoy the whole experience!
after 4 years of hard hard use, much in the triple digit speeds, my ABS is doing
just fine, the pull down is fine, the BOSE is doing fine and i even upgraded
(a choice, not a breakdown), the tail lights have not melted, the DIC has not
burned out, the windows havent stopped working, the headgaskets are still
going, the trani is still going, the GEL battery is doing great, leather needs a
re-coloring, need new tires .. that is about it ... dings give it character.

of course if you get an '88, you can buy a donor unit will all good parts for
about $1,000 and fill the parts closet.

so far, in my 4 years, two water pumps and several ISC units
that the car really didnt need but was talked into getting
by some well intentioned members. and one high pressure hose for
the ABS - $40.

oh, last year the cat died, so there went another $125

i am considering selling off the closet contents, as i never even peek
in there any more.

I recently picked up a donor parts car on craigs list for $1650
so I dont have to worry about parts in the future.
Im in my 90 for the long run so it was worth picking up another machine.

Plus theres always ebay for parts.

and it had a hardtop to boot !

Bill,

and you got depressed when we spotted them at under $3,000 ?

Hold your seatbelts !!

This $1650 89 allante had been in an 8mph on the front driver side,
So the owner bought new a headlight, used fender, hood, front bumper cover ect...

He was an older gentlemen and he lost interest in fixing it after 2 years of it robbing his carage space.

He advertized it and I was the first to arrive (6am) with dough, truck and trailer.

He called me a week later to say that he had over 40 phone calls from a 1000 mile radius for the car

Sooo... sometimes you win & sometimes luck smiles on you:)

WoW! i just picked up a second Allante today. 2700 for a 89 red w/hardtop. 112K. Runs and drives. Has bad valve clatter under a hard load, but A/C is cold , speakers work and struts good, ABS a lil hard tho. Body and paint is flawless. Interior OK but sunvisors just hang!

I mistakenly turned down a 93 (lighter blue) with 27k miles on it about 5 years ago. $9600. Needed a roof, as someone had taken a knife to it. I am still kicking myself.
I had just bought 2 other cars, and I did not have the $$ at the time.

there will be others.

Allantes are like girls, they like to play hard to get, but then
you find there is an oversupply just around the corner.

This is the best of times for buying Allantes. They have never been this cheap and will soon be rising in price. I can't believe how much they have dropped in the last 2-3 years! Once the supply has dried up of cheap cars and the parts cars are broken up & scrapped, people will start to remember them fondly and interest will rise again. It always happened in the past, ie; 1959 Caddy's were $100-200 cars when I was in high school. Nobody wanted them, as they were so out of style by the early 70's. I bought one and my Mom made me hide so the neighbours didn't think we had "welfare relatives" for a visit. Same thing with Muscle cars by the end of the 70's. I bought a clapped out 69 Dodge Charger R/T that was an original 426 Hemi 4 speed car, NOM, but still a badass driver for $1400 in '77. (Had a hard time getting my money back after the summer was over). The cycle will repeat! BUY,BUY, until yer wallet revolts!
It is a great time to buy an Allante because they are so cheap now. I only hope you're right about the cycle. I have my doubts when it comes to the Allante.

as you can guess, i been tracking the trend.
IMO, the declining cycle is way from over - in fact, it is accelerating.

The salvage yards have dozens of them. Parting is increasing.
That 8,000 survivors that i noted 3 years ago, has to be way down,
maybe past the 6,000. But 6,000 is still a lot of cars in a market flooded
with 2-seater cars for the mature buyer.

i give it another 5 years. when the last Allante made turns 20,
THAT may be the psychological point of "collect".

heck, i am even seeing the few Allante RARE units go for peanuts.
Those models where the production for specific colors was from 21 to 150
units, CHEAP!

Maybe "the-right '92" for me, may still get here.
IF not, there is no lack of Vettes.

Wow what a shame. I bet there are not that many pace cars out there. That one was a real restorer. I can not believe its a parts car. Mike

that PU100004 car again ? ? ?
is not even the right color ...

INDY PACE CAR definition:
An official car sitting at the Indianapolis Raceway, at the actual race, used as a PACE car or on standby as a backup PACE Car.
TWO .. just TWO .. ONLY TWO.

There may have been more than two made for that event, but only TWO were officially submitted to the INDY 500 Board.
ONLY TWO. There is some rumors about a third, that no one can verify, that no one has proof of, that no one can place at the raceway - if it even exists. SO, we are still at TWO and only TWO.

I got a monster thread somewhere else discussing the details .. ONLY TWO.
Of the TWO, only ONE got to run the Indy raceway. The 2nd unit was at-the-ready and was not run at the race, has never been driven in public, has never been upon the public roads. These TWO look significantly different than the production cars. LOOK for my pictures.
Not only do I know that, I also have the locations and VIN's of both cars.
Neither PACE car has ever been sold, EVER. One was gifted to a race driver the other is a museum item.

However, the dealers sold a few hundred stickers, hundreds.
A PACE Car, the parted car on ebay, was NOT. People get all emotional about some car with $49 stickers.
BTW, if you like a sticker, they come up on ebay now and then, and go for about $25.
Anyone that pays extra for such a car, is ... ... i will refrain from the comment.

If that car at the salvage yard was a pace car, trust me, it would not ever have been sold in parts, even if it was wrecked. It would never have found its way into the yard at all. No way - the Allante crowd is unique.

one of the TWO:
