Has anyone painted the roof mount antenna body color? I'm wondering if the metallic in the paint may impede the performance?

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm going to paint it, but now the next question. I suppose I can paint it on the car and mask all around it, but I suspect the base pops off and the mast unbolts, but I tried to gently pry on the base and it's not popping off. Does anyone know if it does indeed snap on and off or does the entire unit attach from underneath the headliner?
