Backup camera problems

I received my special order Escalade ESV last month and have had a horrible time with my backup camera since I got it. I keep getting told that the camera is working as intended and there is nothing wrong with it. Unfortunately , I cannot see things behind me because the picture is foggy, lacks color and there is no contrast to differentiate objects. At night time it is even worse, if that is possible. Anyone else have this problem? Cadillac denies that it is a problem, but for me it is a safety issue.

Everyone as a good point of view so far.. so after reading the other thread and people mentioning the LED bulbs I wanted to conduct a little experiment.. First during the bright day time the image is ok.. I still feel they could have made it a sharper image like the previous models. I agree that since this new for the vehicle things never go 100%. I will try turning off the Sensor to see if the rear view image changes to full screen instead of split. So yesterday I was able to get a hold of my buddies tow lamps (they stick on to the vehicle when towing using suction cups) I only used one which had the bright reserve bulb. I was very interested in finding out if adding additional light when reserve will help and to my surprise it does. The only other lights was a street lamp which was a few feet away and across the street, and the vehicles reserve lights. Now I am not going to tell you "WOW" I can see everything but from just adding this one little bulb did help. So the posting about the bulb might be something to consider. I have already told customer care and written a letter to GM about the image on the camera and as well as made my dealer aware. When I speck to them next week I would like to see if they can ask any of the engineer working on the design teams if they might be able to tell me if they make a brighter bulb for this vehicle so I can replace them.

That's awesome! Maybe a pic of that experiment you did?

lol..I knew someone would ask for one..I didn't take any pic's..I am sorry.. I had trouble trying to post pic's..when I took delivery off the vehicle on the 16th Jan.. Everyone had asked for a pic so I told them to PM me and vsummers is the only one that did and I emailed the pic of the vehicle..But I think if you even take like one of those stick on light or something a little brighter you will see the difference right off way..I don't think it's going to be the 100 % but you get a better image off whats behind you.. I was luckly to find some one that actually had a tow light but I thing any thing will work as long as it's a little brighter then a small flashlight.. but it's something I will bring up when I speck to them and also service..

----------

I had stuck on the light just to the bottom of the bumper.. I didn't want to damage the paint so was carefull to put it on the bottom

Maybe one under each of the four cameras.
under the rear view mirrors and venter of front and back bumpers.
Single switch that comes on with the cameras.
I would also like a way to engage the front camera while parking without having to shift into reverse and back to forward again.
Need a power source and tie it in together with cameras.
Under thereat bumper is easier as you can use the trailer harness.

yes.. if I can find out from service or CCC if they might speck to someone from design team or engineer dept. they might be able to let me know if they offer a replacement bulb or if it's even possible to replace since it looks like one unit and I can't be sure if you can just replace the bulbs or whole light bar..

Hi.. I just sent you a PM.. I think all we need is a better bulb.. I didn't think it would work me playing around in the cold with a stupid tow light but it made it a little better.. I know I wish I took pic's.. but It was cold and really didn't want to make a big deal of it.. but if you try you can see it's make the image much better then what it does at night.. not sure if GM will put lights all over the place for these cam's but a brighter bulb will help..

I think you might have something there with the lights. This is the first year with those amazingly bright break lights. Which is on of the reasons I wanted it. They are different bulbs than before so I think the light scatters a everywhere which is good for drivers behind you to see. Unfortunately, the light is not all directed towards the back which is where the camera is looking. So these new lights give a fuzzy appearance to the picture.

After picking up my platinum yesterday, I noticed the difference from the premium I tried. I don't know but the backup camera as well as the 360 from the platinum doesn't look bad at all and it looked more defined than the premium.
You are correct, most likely the premium was built before the platinum, when there was the change at the assembly plant. What change is yet to be determined.

It can't be anything with the lights, because the grill camera has NO lights.

It's more for night time you need a brighter light when you back up.. The front you have your head lights so you have a good view in the image.. When you back up at night you only have very small reverse lights.. it doesn't give you a good image at all.. if you back up and there is no other light beside the vehicle, you can't see anything...

I currently have a '12 Escalade Platinum and the only time I have a problem with the camera is when it's raining. The water droplets screw up the picture to the point that it's virtually useless. Today I was told that my new '15 Escalade would be here in two weeks and now, after reading this post, I have premature anxiety about the camera. It also has the 360 degree view option (they all do now) so I wonder if all the cameras are bad. Stay tuned and I'll give an update after I get into the new one.

It's okay. It's not a deal breaker.

I have the same problem with my 2015 Escalade. Just left the dealer and they had ordered a new camera (same part number as present camera) which was scheduled to be replaced today. Dealer cancelled the new install as they received a memo today from Cadillac about a complete new set up that will be available in a few weeks as they know they have a major problem.
