Automatic Transmission (5L40-E) Fluid Change

Hi guys, I wanted to change the transmission fluid on my '04 CTS, 3.6L. Its an automatic transmission. I found a DIY guide on Cadillac FAQ but its for a CTS-V and I was wondering weather the method for fluid change for the CTS and CTS-V are the same. I posted the link to the site with the DIY. If someone has completed a TF change on a CTS please let me know. Also I was wondering weather I should change the filter or not. My car has 138,000 KM and I recently bought the car so I dont know if a fluid change was ever done. And I'm also feeling slightly jerking when the gear shift. The DIY does not indicate how to change the filter. I'm new to mechanic work and usually take this kind of stuff to a mechanic but I would like to start doing my own work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got one from Napa. I'm sure there are other places around that sell them.

My friend works for GM so he got me all OEM parts for 50% off. But I'm sure most parts store have them.
nicely done mann
Thanks, I wouldn't have had the cojones to do this work without all the help I received from members of this forum. Thanks guy!
Thanks for the writeup! What fluid did you go with?

yea for sure, I'm curious to see if I would notice a huge difference in performance like I did when I did the tranny fluid change.
Just did my diff a few weeks ago. Dont really notice a difference but it is super easy to do. The bolt will be on there pretty snug
lets see some pics of the diff change
No prob, pics will be up. If there's any advise on the fluid change I'd appreciate it. I believe slip additive is required if I remember right. I'll be placing the whole order with my buddy at the GM dealership and I guess he'll know what is required.

What I'm also curious about is why differential needs slip additive but transmission doesn't? or does it?
you only need a slip additive for you diff if you have the limited slip differential.. no additive is needed for the tranny, though you could put some if youd like

How would I know if I have a limited slip differential? thanks
depends on the model you have... check your spare tire cover build code.. it should be G80 i beileve for the LSD

Thanks, I'll check that. if not the parts department at GM should know if I give them my VIN number.
Hey guys, I'm gonna do the differential fluid change right now but I can't find how tight to tighten the drain and fill plugs using torque wrench specs. If someone can tell me the accurate amount in ft lb, I'd really appreciate it!!! thanks!!!

Tighten the fill/drain plug to 39 N·m (29 lb ft).
