I purchased a 2017 XT5 9 months ago and love it! I especially loved that it did not have the annoying auto start/stop feature (turned out to be incorrect). I have drove the car for 9 months and not once did the car auto start/stop...Last week I had the dealer replace my battery and to my surprise, as I was driving away from the dealership, the auto start/stop engaged and worked all day. I parked the car for 3 days and when I drove it the next time, the auto start/stop no longer works. The dealer says there are no faults and the battery is new. Anyone have a twilight zone experience like this?

Many of the personalization settings (Owner's manual chapter) will recycle when the 12V battery is disconnected/changed. Sounds as if your vehicle relearned itself after the 12V battery install.

Have you noticed any other personalization settings have changed - mirrors, sets, HVAC settings, radio settings ?

Welcome to CF !!!!

Thank you! I have not noticed any other changes except for the clock and date. I actually expected to have to reset seat settings, radio stations, etc. but everything was exactly as I had it. I also thought a reset situation, but why would it work for only 1 day, and why not for the previous 9 months?

The operation you describe is normal for a 2017. If you drive regularly for reasonable distances, the start/stop will function once again.

The battery state of health is monitored when the car is parked. You parked long enough for the battery to slightly discharge because of normal parasitic draw on the battery keeping a lot of electronic systems operating, even when not running.

Sounds like your new battery is fine and your electrical system is fine as well.

Your 2017 likely had the original battery. It may have been is a slightly deteriorated state of health, but well enough for normal operation. If you had delayed a battery change much longer, you may have encountered messages while operating that disabled certain functions affecting systems such as AC, power steering, etc.

Your battery change was at a good time before those things happened and is likely good for about 5 more years depending on your driving habits. Short trips and infrequent use are hardest on the car.

So the thought is that the auto start/stop will start functioning again after I start driving it consistently? I'm on board with the thought of the battery being slightly deteriorated and that's possibly why it didn't work the first 9 months I owned the car, and that it started working again once the new battery was installed. What I'm still confused about is that since day 1 of the new battery (when the auto start/stop worked started working) it hasn't worked since. The car did sit for 3 days after that, but has been drove short and long distance several times since. I did notice this morning, on the dash just below the RPM gage, it says AUTO STOP OFF.

That marking on the tachometer has always been there and indicated the position of the RPM indicator finger when the engine is stopped because of start/stop engagement. When the engine is turned off when parked, the finger will drop below that mark to 0.

After sitting for three days, it will take several drive cycles to restore the state of health to the point that start/stop will function once again.

When the start/stop is functioning, that is a good indicator that your battery is in optimal state of health. Until that time, the charging system will more aggressively recharge the battery.

Be happy it doesn't' work. Many of is here have installed the Start/Stop eliminator to end this annoying function.
I was very happy when I purchased the car that it didn't have that function...Sadly that has all changed with the install of the new battery. I hate the option and don't really want it to work but I was worried other issues were going on that I need to address. Tell me more about this "eliminator", sounds fantastic!

There are a couple of start/stop eliminators out there. The cheapest can be found on Amazon. It attaches in the wiring near the hood opening. When it is attached, the car thinks that the hood is always open and the start/stop will not function. A more expensive fix (I use this on my 2017 XT5) is made by Range Technology. It plugs into the diagnostic port and will eliminate start/stop. It will also eliminate the V4/V6 AFM and make the engine run in V6 all the time. To me that is a plus because the AFM has been known to cause very expensive engine repairs.

Hi dd,
This is the link to the Amazon Start/Stop eliminator.

Amazon.com: Auto Start Stop Eliminator/Delete/Disable for Chevrolet Equinox/Malibu/Cruze (2019-2023) and for Cadillac XT4/XT5/XT6 (2019-2022) & Buick Enclave/Encore (2019-2023) : Automotive

As noted above all it does is to fake out the sensor to think the hoods open. Nothing else. I've had it for over a yr now w/o any issues. Remote start still works. Even the dashboard lite stays 'lit' as if it's still functioning normally. Plus the price has dropped to $22. Only thing you need to check on is the size of the connector - prior to 2019, the connector was the 'big' size. Vendor has both as noted in the thumbnails.

I've had the vehicle serviced and no one has even mentioned that the start/stop wasn't working. I have a funny feeling the dealers are probably used to being off by now.

Let us know how you do.

I'm back with an update to my original post. I have been driving the car, after the new battery install, for about a week. I drive daily short and long distance trips. The auto start/stop has not started working again which makes me wonder if there is something else going on that needs to be addressed. The only other thing I have noticed that I believe shouldn't be, is the red hazard light and the white parking assist light around the CUE display stays on continuously (never goes dark). If I remember correctly, those two lights should fade to off after a period of time once the car is turned off. Can anyone chime in to advise if those lights go off for you?

What is the setting you use for your HVAC? If on "Hi" or "Lo" your start-stop is inhibited.

The lights are normal. I tried mine and had the same results. Initially they were off after the car sat for a day, but those lights are on long after everything else is off.

The HVAC is set for 72 degrees and not on hi or low. For 9 months now I didn't even know the car had this feature until I got a new battery a week ago. The start/stop activated for 1 day and has not worked since.

The lights are normal I agree. What I feel is not normal is that they NEVER go off.

My lights went off after an hour. Mine is a 2020.

Can you define your short and long distance trips more clearly and the mix. If your trips are 5 minutes for six days and 20 minutes for one day, the start-stop will be inhibited because the battery is not at an optimum voltage level, even if new.

I drive 45 minutes 2x a day Monday through Friday and several stops in town most days. Groceries, post office, etc. My lights have stayed on for three weeks straight. Never turn off.

Your lights are behaving strangely.

Your driving should be quite adequate for charging system recovery. What is the temperature at which your engine is operating?

I will confirm the engine operating temp on my way home this evening and get back to you. I really appreciate your insight. I really don't like the start/stop but I don't want an underlying issue to exist either. I'm going to park my car at the airport for 8 days (March) and I don't want to come back to a dead battery if there is an underlying issue. I'm feeling like the lights staying on may be a symptom of something that could drain the battery over a long term park.
