Take the ashtray out:
-Remove the shifter knob (there is a horseshoe clip holding-it) and pull the knob up.
- Remove the wood trim around the shifter knob (start from the coup holder and pull the corners UP (not the wood the plastic the wood is mounted on top). Is held by four spring-loaded clips (located on the sides close to the crones). Be careful there are wires connected underneath (no need to disconnect the wires) but don’t pull too hard.
- In front of the wood trim on the lower edge of the ashtray locate two screw (one on each corner). And behind the actual tray (remove the tray) inside the ashtray is a 3-rd one. That is what holds the ashtray mounted in the console.
- Carefully pull the ashtray out but not too much because there are other wires connected to the ash tray light bulb.
- Disconnect the wire (that gray round plastic thing has two hooks grabbing on each side)
- Take the ashtray out and remove the wood lied. Is a plastic covered by the wood trim. That cover is held by the spring (release the spring first) and two “dimples” embedded (not very deep) in the ashtray case (acting like hinges). Just squeeze them together (with calculated force) to release.
- Looking to the back of the lied (like you will be tiny sitting inside the tray) on the right side is a slider with a nipple that goes inside a v shaped channel screwed in to the as tray case (pivots around the screw and is spring loaded).
- Take a look to that nipple, usually wears out in time so does not sit in the channel thus stays open.
- You can put some plastic or some good epoxy to restore the nipple or just get a new lied form a scrap yard. But should be a simple fix, once you see it open is easy to figure out how it works (kind of like a retractable pen).
