Starting a new thread so I am not hi-jacking someone else's thread ...

I am contemplating which radar detector to get. I have an old Bel that does not pick up hardly any radar or laser anymore probably due to the technology changes. I have looked at the 9500ix and the 9500ci and they seem pretty cool if they work as advertised. Has anyone had a 9500ci installed on their 08 or 09 AWD CTS? Any complications or draw backs with the "perminent" installation itself? It is a hidden install with the detector installed behind the bumpers and such.

I have seen threads elsewhere arguing over which detector is best and that is not what I am initially intending for this thread to be. I just want to know if there are complications or compromises with a 9500ci on the CTS.

Thanks!

I've had a Valentine 1 since version 1, that's about 12 years, I think and just got it upgraded to the latest version. It's never failed me and with front and rear antennas and arrows that show where the threat is, they're really great. I haven't encountered a laser trap yet, but it's supposed to be the best. Laser's tougher since it instant on and doesn't bounce around as much as RF in the radar bands for the detector to pick up.

I'm always amazed at how far away it picks up threats.

I bought the 9500ix a couple of weeks ago and had it hardwired to my ignition the wire comes out by my rearview mirror and the radar is mounted just above the left side of my mirror. The detector work great no problems so far.

I installed a 9500ci for someone in a new M3. Incredibly involved, but boy is it cool. I can't attest to the performance, as I havent seen the person since. I will find out their opinion and reply.

Nick - besides the performance review (which would also be helpful), you might be a good source for info on the installation. Knowing how you installed the system on the M3, do you see any problems or compromises with a installation on a CTS4? You are more than likely familiar with the areas on the CTS where the 9500ci components would likely be installed. I would not want to pay the pricy expense for the sytem if I have to compromise something else on the CTS, or if something would not work correctly because of a tricky install on the CTS. The portability of the 9500ix and ease of changing to something else years down the road is also something I need to consider. But I just like the idea of having it all hidden away and out of sight (besides all the extra super cool  features). I am not sure where some of the driver interface stuff would go that would not be combersome either.

Thanks in advance for your valued opinion ...

The 9500ci is a tricky install on any car, but if done properly, is about 95% transparent. The little display module is not invisible, and can use some custom work to french it into the dashboard, although in the cts, the ashtray would work perfectly. I intend on purchasing one myself, but I want to spend money in other areas of the car before I plunk down $1200 on a radar detector.

I have ordered my Escort 9500ci (was on back order) and will get it installed on Saturday - all for about $1650 including "authorized dealer" installation. Being out of sight, having the radar dector undetectable by the cops, and being stealth along with all the other new technology/GPS notifications will make it worth it. I will post pics of the install locations later.

The 9500ci is now installed and I finally got some pics of what the mods look like from the cockpit - see attached. I put both the display and the control module on top of each other and put them in the ash trayish type compartment on the console per Nick's good suggestion. But it is a little tight to get a finger on top of the stack to power down/up the unit but can be done - should you want to do that (normally it turns on and off with the key). So Nick - if you ever buy one of these for yourself and come up with a better type of install at that location, let me know. The compartment can still close without any issue to conseal it away. The green/red warning indicator light I had them put in the dash by the dic controls as I did not want them messing too much behind the gages etc. I have a crome license plate frame. The rear detetor is obvious with that, so i gotta go get a black frame so that it blends in better. This is the "cadillac" of radar systems though - get gagets and gizmos.
