I finally got around to setting up Android Auto but no matter what I did, I could not get it to work. I finally called the help number & they informed me that even though my vehicle was a 2016, it was built in 2015 & was not compatible with Android Auto. Everything that I read said it was so I did a search on this forum & found that there should be a dealer update to add Android Auto. Has anyone done this?

Thanks,

Max

I had the upgrade done to my 2016 ATS, also early build. Software only, cost me $75 (ymmv) and an hour at the dealership. Once it's done, the "projection" icon becomes the Android Auto icon when you connect your phone via usb.

Yep, it’s an software update that was free for a few months when it first came out. Now it’s not but the update is still available for a cost. But there might be a trick to get around that.
If your car is still under warranty, tell the dealer you have an intermittent blank CUE screen and you saw online that there is a software update for that. Hopefully they’ll run a software update to the HMI module and that update should include the Android Auto. Free upgrade because warranty will cover the software update for a blank screen concern.

That's a great idea but they just replaced the whole CUE unit. You would think it would've come with the updated software! lol

The “whole CUE” unit consists of 5 to 6 components. I doubt they did that. They probably replaced a bad CUE screen, I’m guessing? That’s the most common failed component. The heart of the system is the HMI module and that’s the component that needs the software update.

They told me that they replaced the whole unit. When I got my car back, it had that new sticky plastic over the entire screen & all of the buttons, including all of the climate control buttons so it did appear to be a whole new unit.

Not a tsb, it's a paid upgrade - like an accessory.
Is it a Cadillac dealership?
Yes. I think it's just one of those things that many people are not aware so it's probably not a popular fix. I remember something similar with my 06 STS. A year or 2 after I bought it, an update came out for the nav system & my dealer knew nothing about it. Thanks to this very forum, I was able to print out a TSB & take it to them & they were finally able to update it.

I also called Cadillac Customer Service & they said they should know about the update so I'm going to try again tomorrow. I did find an article online about so I'm going to take that it & hopefully they can figure it out.

What I’m trying to say is the CUE screen and button are only part of the system. Behind the dash there are several other computers that make the whole infotainment system work.
Think of the CUE system like a home computer. There is a CPU tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. The CUE screen replacement is like replacing a computer monitor. The heart of the system is the HMI module (like the CPU tower). The HMI is a separate component from the CUE screen and is located elsewhere in the vehicle. Follow me?

I see what you are saying. I assumed it was like the unit in my STS. It was a big, box type unit that pulled right out. I had no idea that the CUE system was in so many separate pieces! So from what I can tell, they replaced the screen, the surrounding buttons & the lower a/c buttons. Not sure about what got replaced on the other side! lol

Well, lo & behold, they found the update! And it works!! I thought for sure I was going to have to do more research to find it for them! lol The update seems to have cleared out all of my saved info like my phone, my saved nav places, my radio presets. I had also updated my Nav system several weeks ago but the map software number never updated. Now it seems to have updated! The best part of it was that the dealership did not even charge me for it! They did it under warranty! I did print out a paper that talked about the update & it did say that the update was complimentary so maybe they saw that! lol

what I've read it has to do with the cue that is installed. But the 2016 xts has the new system,
google this: cadillacs-2016-model-year-lineup-will-get-android-auto-at-some-point
After calling my dealer and then calling Cadillac (and in the article) as well as in the forums its a dealer-installed option and the dealer wants 1 hour (in the northeast that's $125) . When I bought the car I was able to use Apple play but I also have an android and it didn't seem to work I brought it into the dealer and they said i needed to install the app on my phone. I used the apple for the next year or so and as I crept up on the end of the warranty I remembered to give android auto a try. (it's pretty sad that the dealer has a record of my complaint about it not working a week after i bought it and won't honor it- i would and should have made a stink about it then)
I have the projection Icon but it still doesn't seem to work - so I made the calls.
(can anyone comment on the projection icon)?

The projection icon changes to AppleCarPlay or Android Auto when a cell phone is plugged into USB.
At the time of production, the Android Auto software wasn’t ready but all the needed hardware was. So Cadillac put the hardware in the car and released information stating the software will come out later and they’ll update the car for free for a while. The software came out months later and dealers started updating the cars on the lot and the tech savvy customers who wanted it. After a while, Cadillac stopped offering the update for free and forced the dealers to charge for it if someone specifically asked for the Android Auto update.
To get around this, people with vehicles under warranty could go to the dealer with an infotainment complaint (real or made up) that would trigger a warranty software update to the HMI module. Any current update to the HMI module will also include the previous Android Auto update.
There are several service bulletins with CUE issues that require a HMI software update. The issues listed in those bulletins range from Bluetooth issues, blank screens, voice commands, and various odd glitches.
