Hi folks. Looks like the a/c compressor on my newly acquired 1991 Brougham packed in just after a few hundred miles that I drove it. Now my local says it would be 700 bucks. Although the compressor on itself costs 250 refurb on eBay. He says I need the whole kit and caboodle with condenser and what not as well.

Do I? Can I not just have the compressor replaced?

Anyone know a good and reputable place to go to in NJ?

700 sounds cheap for a system with Freon. Yes, you need a new condenser. The system must be properly evacuated and bone dry if you do not want the new compressor to fail in short order. How are the refrigerant lines? Might as well do it right once.

Yep, I saw and heard it come apart. Big noise and some smoke on way home. Was afraid this was something with the engine, but first instinct was switching off a/c, and that's what it was.
