Adding Navigation to 2014 ATS

Does anyone know if adding navigation is just as easy as replacing the HMI module on our cars? How much work is to reprogram this module? Could I just purchase one, install it and walk into a Cadillac dealer and ask them to program it? Would anyone know?

My HMI module is 23443746. I believe I would need 23443747 to add navigation?

My System info:
HMI Ver: 12.6V048_R1_MY14
GUI Framework: RBEI.MY14_13
Soft Ver: GMG2_12.6N146.3

Is this a link to another post? for some reason it takes me back to the main menu of the forum...
Sometimes the links get wonky... Try a regular web browser if on mobile or the other way around. The link worked for mobile web page for me but not desktop.

Look for a post in this forum about adding Nav to a 2013 SRX. It was started by dmurphy 8/9/14 & the most recent post was from GTPrix 12/14/14.

Sounds like there are at least a couple of options.

At min, you'd need a reprogrammed HMI & a GPS antenna. I don't know what GMNavTech's price is, but I believe you can get a pre-programmed HMI+GPS antenna package for about $1k. I think that price is net after core credit for your current HMI.

dmurphy's post leads me to believe it's a relatively easy DIY install.

Took me about 45 minutes to do ... really wasn't bad. Just had to remove the glovebox and replace the HMI module.

Not sure what's involved in the ATS, but assuming it's similar -- just don't know where they stuffed the HMI module! :)

(Still working great, BTW ... although I'd trade it all for CarPlay connectivity to my iPhone 6+.)
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

thanks for all of the input guys.... I actually found a wrecker around my house that had a wrecked 2014 ATS with Nav.... I picked up the HMI module from it for $260 (Good price I guess?). I believe i may have to get some programming done as the VINs wouldnt match.... i'm curious to know if a Caddy dealer would do the programming for me if I install it on the car... I'll call my dealer and GMNavTech to see if they do it and how much it costs....I'll keep you guys posted!

Yeah

1. Its the wrong HMI (European Maps)
2. Its blank.
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

Thanks GTPprix, that makes sense. Can these be converted to US, Canada maps? Also when you say it is Blank, does it mean that it will need a full flash installed?
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

That's why I broke down and bought a new HMI instead of a used one. It was $400 but don't need to deal with re-program vin # and all that stuff. Where did you install your GPS antenna?
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

my 2015 ATS was supposed to have come with NAV, but it wasn't there. The dealer installed the factory NAV. It only took less than 30 minutes so it shouldn't have been too complicated. They then had to send a work order through to be processed to show the car now had Navigation. They told me if I had paid for the upgrade it would have been about $2500.
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

I wish I didn't have the nav. My garmin was so much better. Much faster, did not talk to me in long sentences and understood many more words and POIs without making mistakes. Why most built in Navs are slower and less useful is beyond me. I miss seeing elevation data as well.

Two reasons. One: there is zero competition, You want built-in, you have to take what they offer. Two: anyone who will pay $800 for something that is free on a phone or dirt cheap on a aftermarket nav, is not value conscious so why even try?

Now, current in-car nav could never be as good as phone nav if for no other reason than the voice control is backed by supercomputers in the cloud and the data is months or years more up to date. But you are right that current in-car nav could easily be better than an aftermarket dedicated nav.

Can you explain to me what you mean by "but don't need to deal with the re-programming of VIN# and all that stuff"?
I understand that if you purchase a new GM HMI with the IO6 option you still have to get the dealer to program the VIN information
in to it. Are you saying that if I purchase a new GM HMI Module and install it, it will marry itself to the car information when the unit is first
powered?
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

If you get the video and navigation in motion unlock it comes ready to go you simply plug it in and it learns the Vin
Re: Adding Navigation to 2014 Cadillac ATS

Guys, I did this on my 2014 XTS. I purchased a 2016 HMI and antenna and installed it myself. I couldn't find any videos on how to swap it out for the XTS so the going was a little slow so as not to break something. The HMI is located just above the passenger kick panel. The supplier had my VIN already programmed into the unit and it works perfectly. The 2016 unit is backward compatible to the 2014 and includes the most recent updates. It comes on almost as quick as you can tap the icon to start it. The antenna has a great magnet and I installed it on the dash superstructure rather than try to remove the dash mesh. I even get my text messages on it through my Android phone. There are a few hidden screws to get to but other than that pretty straight forward.

Could you please share part number of 2016 HMI you have purchased?

He bought it from a supplier that programs the HMI with specific software. He didn't buy an HMI outright.

Works great! Came with VIN programmed in. I had XM Radio add Weather and Traffic to it also.
