Add a hardtop?

Just purchased a 1990 Convertible. Manufactured as a convertible, can a hard top be added easily or what modifications, if any, would have to be made to accommodate a hard top?

Always glad to see another Ohioan join this little fraternity. Hardtops are periodically available on ebay for a quite reasonable ($500-750) price. The 1990 was an interesting model year as mid year changes were made, and the most prominent was the method of using the front latches. In the beginning of the MY the latches were manual latches and after the mid-year change they were power assisted. All 1987-1989s came with a hardtop, so these hardtops are more readily available. If you have the power assist latched and can find a reasonable Phase one top (87-89) just holler and we'll get you the link to the "how to with Pictures". Worth the effort in my opinion!
Thanks. My 90 must be an early 90 since the latch is manual--I have to jmanually unlatch and latch. Can I still put a hard top on if I can find one? Thanks.

Dick
Absolutely, the hook latches are the same for the convertible and hard top. Since all 87-89 came with hardtops, more of them should be available. Get a phase one top ( manual hooks ) and it will be an exact fit. happy hunting!
all early 1990 are PHASE I and came with dual tops.
the only modification you need to do is to
relieve your wallet of about $300 - $500.

the 1990 1/2 switched to the PHASE II tops.

you can see other details on these cars.
do a google for < cadillac allante xyz facts >
and you should find a wealth of information

look at this ebay posting. the pictures indicate a phase two top (90.5 to 92) by the latches being in the middle of the front of the top. This gentleman is incorrectly advertising this to fit 87-90 cars. this is incorrect. he actually has a much more rare and valuable top (2k-2.2K) than a phase one. Be extremely careful. you need the manual j-hooks at the extreme corners of the front of the top.
Bill,

better add a few $$$, it is still a darn good deal at $1,000
if you can pick it up in Ohio ...
Stealth, phase 2 top-15 hours to go at $406. I stopped at $401. Flacko93 bought his for $380 plus a 4 hour drive. I'll buy every one that I can get for less than $400.within that kind od drive. (why I have no idea!)
Bill,

when i bough my '88 you couldnt touch a phase I for under $400 and and
a phase II for under $1,200. the HT from my donor was sold for around
$450 if i remember correctly.

and people are spending how much doing "conversions" that look
lesser than the real McCoy?

my my , what a market this is.

that future '92 is getting closer to my targeting sights.

phase II just topped off at $1275-- Doggone Stealth you keep it up and we all goinna believe you know what you talking about...... Good Call!
Does anyone know where I could find, in excellent shape, a pearl white hard top phase I for my early 1990? Thanks in advance.

Dick
looks like he needs a phase I
he is in luck. there are around 4,000 PEARL WHITE Phase I
tops out there - 3091 just from the '87 to '89 cars plus the
'90's Phase I. these tops rarely go to the salvage yards and
often they are forgotten when a car is sold and show up in storage.

it is simply a matter of time before one pops up FOR SALE.
i be posting a WANTED add in every Cadillac site and also
a WANTED listing in ebay.

as i said, $400 to $500 is the going rate for a good condition.
if one goes in demanding EXCELLENT, expect to pay much more
even if the seller had been willing to let one go for less before
hearing the EXCELLENT demand. IMO !
