Adaptive Cruise temporarily unavailable??

I took the family on a 400 mile each way road trip and twice in one day the cruise would kick off and the message center states “adaptive cruise temporarily unavailable.” Temporarily?! What the hell does that mean? It would turn off for about 20-25 miles and then come back on.

Anyone experience this before? I was about ready to burn the car to the ground I was so pissed.

Happens to mine all the time. Drives me bonkers. Have to drive it into my shop and wash it. After that all is good. There should be a way to disable the adaptive part on the cruise control. My 2006 Toyota Sienna had this feature and I was able to disable it so at least I still had basic cruise.

Did you happen to try both buttons that re next to each other on the steering wheel? It's the cancel button, not the on/off button. Here's the wording from Cadillac's website:

Switching Between Regular and Adaptive Cruise Control — Advanced

If your vehicle is equipped with this feature, you can switch between Adaptive Cruise Control — Advanced and regular Cruise Control. Here’s how to do this:

•Press and hold the CANCEL button.

•You’ll see either the ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL icon or the regular CRUISE CONTROL icon on your vehicle display. This icon indicates which Cruise Control mode has been selected.

Check which CRUISE CONTROL icon is displayed before setting your Cruise Control speed.
Still may not be available on your model year but hey, worth a shot.

As I recall, someone on this forum did not want to pay a dealer $2000 to fix the issue, dug deep into the sensor specs and eventually found another GM radar sensor with idential specs that was something like $250 and just pluged it in and it worked without any re-programming. I'll have to dig to see where that was as I did not save the page for some reason.

Right here a few posts down:

A couple people have bought just the part and installed themselves. Unfortunately it does require a dealership to program/calibrate so even if you do the install yourself, you will need the dealer for it to work with your vehicle. Sounds like the dealership cost has been minimal and doesn't seem so hard to install the new component, so definitely worth doing yourself to save the $1000+ dealers are charging.

So for those experiencing this problem, I may have a solution. Recently drove from TX to California and my Adaptive Cruise shut off several times, and I figured out why. When you are in the middle of nowhere and the radar doesn't see any cars/buildings for a certain amount of time, the system shuts off because it has no way of knowing if the radar is malfunctioning. Once the radar sees another car, it will work again.

I just returned from a 2200+ mile round-trip from Arizona to Montana and back... just before we made it to West Yellowstone Montana, the adaptive cruise control quit working and never came back. Luckily my 2018 has the ability to switch from the adaptive cruise to standard cruise control so I could rest my foot a few times. I already had an appointment scheduled at my local Cadillac dealership for a drivetrain repair this morning. I asked them to see if they replaced the windshield prior to me purchasing it and they confirmed they had... well, that explained why the windshield camera wasn't installed properly. Only 2 out of the 4 pins affixed to the glass were clipped into the camera mount. I figure it bouncing around up there didn't help the calibration situation. Well, they just called and told me the camera needs to be replaced, programmed and calibrated. The GM is only willing to pay half the bill, leaving me with an almost $600 repair bill. I told them no and called Cadillac asking for assistance. We shall see... I know these cameras have been problematic for a decade or more. I used to manage a large auto glass business and these were replaced more often than they should with multiple part number revisions listed for many the GM lineup. Fingers crossed they come through, it's only right!
