Re: Putting together oil cooler kit... have some Q's / need some advice

you could start looking at brands that are a little cheaper than mocal. Earl has a 19 row 10AN cooler for about $150 (Earl's 41910ERL 19 Row Oil Cooler -10 AN). I'm sure where you source the parts and what brands will definitely influence the total price
The fittings and lines seem to be the really expensive part (over $800). Anyway to cut down on cost there?

Chris,

Have you tried to price the hoses at a local hydraulic repair shop? If you know the lengths and the ends, they should be able to put them together for you.

Re: Need help with oil cooler

"Pissinuoff" has a cooler set up. He may be helpful on this. Here is what I've learned so far. First, if your car has headers, there are some challenges. If your car doesn't have headers then Katech or Lingenfelter has an bolt on cooler adapters (10AN) that allow you to have the factory oil filter location but you must by an inline thermostat. Or you can purchase the Mocal adapter with a built in thermostat. If you have headers then you can go to smaller 8AN fittings and use the Derale adapter which allows you to have the factory oil filter location. If you want to go to 10AN fittings (my preference) and you have headers, then you will have to get a remote filter set up because space is very tight and I can't see how to make the lines fit. The tough part is finding a place to mount the filter. Inside the fender well looks like the best spot I've located so far. Now I have never met anyone yet that has a cooler with headers except Pissinuoff. I hear he has a top shelf set up with the 8AN fittings. If anyone has done 10AN with headers and the stock filter location it would be great to hear from you.
Gotta revive this one because we are dealing with this first hand at the shop now.

Any updates on this, what's the difinitive answer for the cooler setup WITH Kooks headers ???
If I'm reading all the threads correctly: Either a Remote Filter adapter or PISSNUOFF's setup which consists of an adapter plate with -8 fittings

Any luck on the TPIs adapter and Kooks working ?
PISSNUOFF chime in with details and part numbers please ?

I've got no problems with the cooler or the lines, just need the adapter or a sandwich adapter that will work with the Kooks...(Canton or Peterson maybe?)

If you go with the remote filter go with Earls bypass and filter mount (Summit Racing). The added benefit is that the system filters cooled oil only and the filter doesn't act like a heat sync since it's away from the motor.
There was supposed to be a new adapter from Improved Racing that is made skinny headers and a LS set up. I never heard back from anyone if it works with the V1 and Kooks.

Re: Need help with oil cooler

Thanks Mike, the guys from the shop talked about that one from Improved Racing yesterday. Might just give some of these a shot to see what works
I guess if I go to a dry sump setup this would be a moot point...:)

I think -10AN is the way to go. I'm going to end up using a spin-on take-off adapter, which actually has -12AN ports pointing straight down, with 12-to-10 adapters off of that, then a remote filter mount and thermostat somewhere else - probably in the fenderwell, as crankedupforit did it.

Any luck on the TPIs adapter and Kooks working ?
I did some test fitting with the TPIS adapter and I think it's a no-go with Kooks. It does physically fit, but there's very little room to route hoses anywhere. I tried a couple of different fittings (I've accumulated quite the collection of -10AN swivel fittings ) and I'm just not comfortable with how close the hose and/or fittings would be to the headers.

While the Improved Tuning part may provide more clearance between the adapter and the header, I don't think it will address the fact that you've still got to run the hoses somewhere, and the headers don't leave much in the way of options. About the most promising setup I tried was a 90deg and a 120deg fitting. Keeping in mind the engine mount would be in the foreground, you can see that the 90deg would be point right towards the engine mount (and bending the line to avoid the mount would move it closer to the header), and the 120deg is sandwiched between the pan rail and header with less than 1/4" space (unsatisfactory).

Trying to route the hoses back instead of forward won't work, because the header and tranny will be in the way, which you can kind of get a feel for in this pic:

Thanks Pat.
Did you try any sandwich type adapters such as Canton Racing or Peterson ???

I'm guessing even if the Improved Racing one or maybe a sandwich adapter works, the next problem is routing the lines...

It looks just like the LPE version but a hell of a lot thinner. I snagged one off of ebay, will try it on my LS7 oil pan. I had to shave my LPE adaptor to fit my 1 7/8 headers, Best thing is you could also just run straight 10-an oring fitting into this to cut down on potential leaks.

Re: Need help with oil cooler

Even if you can make the adapter fit and get the lines routed, the amount of space and the heat issues make this setup marginal at best. I went crazy trying to get the LPE. Mocal and Katech adapters to fit. If you pulled off the headers then mounted and plumbed then remounted the headers you could get it to fit. It's still a jammed up layout with 10AN anyway you slice it.

Guys,

Just a heads up, that I haven't got around to trying the IR one yet either.

Have you tried routin the front one forward and the rear one backwards. I dont have any pix but i will try and mentally illustrate it for you.

The front (output from engine) you use a 45/90 and you route the hose next to the block using Zip ties to keep it in place. The rear fittin you use a 90/120 and you route it towards the tranny then swoop it around the headers routin it through the suspension till you get it to the front. This way you are not tryin to get two 10an hoses to squeeze between the block and headers.

Am runnin kooks 1 7/8 headers so you can imagine how little space i have.

Plug wires i found the Taylor or Granatelli with stock plug connectors keep everything tight and away from the headers and engine bay.

Re: Need help with oil cooler

This is for a chev small/big block not an LS motor..

Try a moroso 23694... http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=21001
This is what i'm using but I do not have headers...yet
I was posting it more for a visual, but thanks for another part number to consider. Canton makes the same adapter as well, Part number 22-546
Yup, those would appear to be identical. Based on what I could see, it won't work with headers. (At least, not with Kooks).

Angled to the rear, lines have nowhere to go:

Angled to the front, the line closest to the oil pan might work, but the other line doesn't have enough horizontal clearance to bend enough to clear the header and front subframe. (I tried with both 30 and 45deg fittings, as I recall.)

Obviously pointing anywhere in between those two pictures means you're pointing right at the header, so that's a no-go.

Re: Need help with oil cooler

Well that just sucks...
So looks like either a remote filter setup or drysump :helpless:

Re: Need help with oil cooler

Mike when you get a chance, can you post up pictures of your setup...

Chances are I am going to go that route. I was at the shop today and they are actually using -12 lines and not -10 so it makes for even more issues.
They are looking to go with a spin on sandwich type with the lines coming straight down out of the plate and then getting routed to a remote filter setup.
All of the previous cars that were built for Powell, Buttermore, etc. used the stock exhaust manifolds because headers were/are illegal in T1 & GS so this never became an issue.
Unless there is another brand of headers with a different design (American Racing, Stainless, etc.) that will allow for more clearance, I don't know and I don't want to buy them all to find out...
