I got my V last November and have been loving it ever since. I wish I'd known about this forum when I first got it, but at least I did find it this summer. You guys (combined with the faq) have been a great help learning about my car and I want to thank you all.

I have a few mods on the wish list, but it just went into the dealer for the first one that I was very grateful to find out about here. The factory wheel hop fix. I'd been getting ready to spend the money on BMR, but after reading about the factory fix here decided to start with that. After reading some of the stories about the various ways dealers were reacting to people asking about it, I was at least a bit more prepared for the different reactions I could expect from my dealer.

About a week ago I went in to ask about jetting Lojack installed since that just became available in my area, and asked about the wheel hop tsb at the same time. The person I talked to knew nothing about it but said they'd talk to the service manager as soon as they came in and get back to me that day. Here it was a week later and no response at all. Today I get a call that the factory reps from Lojack are going to be here on Thursday and they want to use my car to show the dealer techs how an install is to be done. At least if I'm going to be a gunea pig it's better to be the one the dealer techs are taught on than the first one they do without the lojack reps watching over them, right? Anyhow I'll let you know how that all goes later if anyone is interested. Well since I was taking the car in anyhow I printed a copy of the TSB on the wheel hop and took that in with me. After getting everything arranged for the lojack install I told them I wanted this TSB taken care of as long as they had the car. After glancing at the TSB the service manager didn't even bat an eye and said that would be no problem, no charge, and would be done by the time they'd already promised me the car would be ready after the lojack install. After seeing some of the stories here about dealers questioning driving habits and trying to charge for the fix I quite pleased with the response I got. I'm looking forward to seeing how much of a difference there is, and hopeful that future mods will be as graciously accepted by my dealer.

Thanks again, and keep that great info coming. Hopefully I'll be able to contribute as well as things progress with my car.

Dave

Welcome!

I just got the bushings and the difference is noticeable and worth it. I was told they have to align your rear end after the bushing-ectomy. That may be something to ask about.

Minor thread jack, but related. Does LoJack work in conjunction with Onstar, or do they install a separate transmitter? I had originally thought that Onstar made Lojack obsolete.......but Onstar will not "report" a theft, though LoJack will. The question is whether the cops react to the lojack report...or if they drag their heels on tracking the car till the owner makes the report.

LoJack is a separate unit totally independent of OnStar. The police are generally very responsive to LoJack signals, plus Lojack has liaison reps that try to make sure that they have an aggressive law enforcement contact in each department that monitors LoJack to make sure that attention is paid to theft reports involving LoJack.

An officer will request a "signal speed-up" that generates more and faster transmitted tones that can be traced. The units in the police cruisers light up like Christmas trees when in the vicinity of a fast signal. It is really a good system if you live in an area with alot of LoJack-receiving police units. Look for the antenna array on the roof of the cruisers with 4 antennas in a square pattern.

An aggressive police department with good LoJack coverage can recover alot of vehicles before the amateur thief tires of joy riding and trashes it, or the professional ships it out of the jurisdiction.

Its great for finding cars hidden in garages and/or parking losts where a peaceful recovery can be made, rather than after a high speed chase where damage can be great.

Yes, construction companies use it on lots of generators, heavy equipment, and other portable/expensive items.

Yes, welcome to this forum. In my case, I was very fortunate to have quite literally stumbled onto this forum a few days before I picked up my V last January. It has been such a necessary companion during my V ownership, I can't imagine being in your situation without it for those first several months. Well, you have a wealth of information to review here (as I'm sure you are already aware) ... enjoy!!! ;)

Based on the information that I was provided, Onstar ALMOST makes LoJack obsolete. While LoJack would still be "better" to track the car down, I'm quite certain that Onstar would work effectively as well if operating.

The main reason that I opted to *STILL* get LoJack, even though I have Onstar, is due to the fact that if the battery is yanked, Onstar becomes useless, Lojack DOESN'T (it has it's own battery backup). As such, a savvy thief might remove/disconnect the battery, thinking that Onstar will be negated, but LoJack can still bite them in the ass.

I've had LoJack installed in 3 cars and each time Lojack sent someone out to install it (which I thought was totally normal operating procedure in order to get the "certificate") I've never heard of a dealer installing them, but perhaps that is just me.

Battery being pulled aside,

in order to recover a lojack car, the police need to have lojack equipt cars (and helicopters).. In the LA area (top 5 markets for car theifs) my buddy's department only has 3 equipt cars...

Onstar, is GPS and all they need to do is call... My buddy actually followed someone threatening to kill themselves thru his city (wife filed the complaint).. Onstar told him what intersection the car was at... He said that their customer service was crap (hard to deal with), but their information was 100% dead on... He never had that experience with lojack..

My problem is that onstar is still to expensive for just that feature.... I was thinking one time (before I got the V) about other "tracking" companies. network car was one (they seemed the best): You could always track your own car online, and it was under 10/ month.

Not sure if they are still around, but I am looking for an alternative (onstar is too expensive for just this feature!)

http://www.networkcar.com

I have no affiliation with them, I just saw them at a tradeshow once..

Don't forget that us early "V" owners are sh*t out of luck in 2008 when Onstar is all digital.

If you have (as I do) an analog based system no support in 2008.

Some enterprising dealer is going to make a fortune bringing cares up to date with newer systems.

THIS INCLUDES THE NAV!!!!
