HI. this is my first post! first off, i love the site. you guys have helped me out a lot already on other issues thank you.

so...... the other day i jacked up the front passenger side to clean the rims and change the fog lite. it drove fine after that. it sat in the garage all the next day no movement. monday i started it up and put it into reverse and wile reversing it sounded horrible when i applied the brakes. i put it in drive and it was making a weird sound and i could feel it, it was like the whole axle was loose or something. i put it back in the garage and now it will not even reverse. i can put it into reverse but when i apply gas it will not go.. its like the axle is locked up. if i put it into neutral and push it back then it rolls just fine.

obviously i don't know much about cars but i usually car figure stuff out. please help this is my only vehicle and i love it. it also keeps loosing coolant and i have to refill it every other day. i took it to a local shop and they said it was a loose hose but it still leaks thanks guys hope to hear from ya

if it help my 1999 sts has 142,xxx on it and has had regular maintenance and this is the first major problem

Warm up the car, then with your foot on the brakes shift between drive, neutral and reverse a few times then put it in park. Leave the car idling, and check the transmission fluid (should be on relatively level ground. First check that the oil is in the area of the dipstick with the xxxxxx on it. This should be a dip stick on the drivers side pointing straight down. Take a white paper towel and lay the tip of the dip stick on the towel. You should have reddish oil stain. If you have brown and or metal dust on the towel you may have internal transmission problems.

i just checked the stick. it was a redish stain with no metal or brownness to it. it wasnt in the red xxx part though. could it be something as simple as low fluid? it shifts in and out of park and neutral and drive real smoth

Pull the Diagnostic Trouble Codes from the car's built-in code reader/scanner. Use the sticky post ^^^ "How to pull codes". Write them down, go back to the sticky and open the URL with OBD2 in the address. This opens a Master Index of all P,B,C, and U codes. Write down all definitions and post it all here.

You MAY be looking at a faulty Internal Mode Switch.

thanks guys for the help and replies. this morning my neighbor and i were out looking at it and he watched me try to back up and noticed something off about my brake caliper, well the person that replaced my pads didn't tighten down the bolts that attach the calipers to the hub. so the bottom bolt fell out and the caliper was getting caught on my rim!!!! needless to say it was an easy fix and cost 20 bucks, which is way better than tranny problems. i feel kinda retarded for not noticing

Well, this incident has a very clear massage for you: Buy a set of factory service manuals, buy a set of tools, start to read the technical section and DIY threads of the forum, and yourself fix your own car....
