98 STS Brakepad Sensor Questions

1344 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  cadavev
Bought a 98 STS with a "Brakepads Need Replaced" message. Had PA inspection done - mechanics says brakepads are good, but sensors for wires are ground away. Am looking on advice on how to fool the computer. Sorry if this offends anyone...otherwise I need to replace pads and sensors. We have state inspections so this feature is more of a pain than a benefit.

Would twisting wires together work? Once that is done, is there a need to clear out the code or will it just not come up anymore? Finally...are there sensors on every wheel, or just one up front and one in back?

All 4 wheels should have them.
I can't check right now but I thought the sensors were available separately from the pads.

Once a good sensor is in place the message will go away on it's own.
As far as defeating it goes, I haven't ever tried.
Whoever replaced the pads should have bought pads that came with new sensors.
You can turn off the brake pad message by twisting the wires together on the sensor that is worn through. The sensors are available in packages of two and that would be the 'best' fix.
ACDelco pad sets include new sensors.
GM sells the sensors individually, so you can just replace the bad one. The AC Delco brake sets come with the sensors, but only if they're the OEM spec sets. The Delco Durastop sets do not have them.
Can anyone give me the part number for brake pad sensor for 98 STS? I was trying to find it but I was unsuccessful. Thanks a lot.
I just cut the wires off and said to hell with the sensor.
