I want to add ref. but the comp. isn't running so I can't add any. I read that disconnecting the battery will clear the code and allow the comp. to start. Is there any other way to clear the code so the comp. will start to allow filling of the system.

Yes, enter the diagnostic mode, display the DTC's and then clear them. See the sticky at the top of the page.
