As you all know, I really like the 90-97 Town Cars. They are great, big smooth riding rear wheel drive land yachts that are a throwback to the 60's and '70s, the heyday of large american sedans. But recently, I took note of the 98-02 Continentals, they are a more european type of luxury with more precise steering and handling than the Town Cars, and they are much quicker due to an extra 65hp. Which do you think is better?

Continental
+ faster than the T/C's
+ better handling than T/C
+ better interior than T/C
+ more gadgets (electonic suspension)
+ 5 place seating
+ shifter in console (optional)
+ "Continental" sounds cooler (but that doesnt matter)
+ more aftermarket with DOHC 4.6
+ not as much of a "granny mobile"

- FWD
- Transverse V8
- Town Car looks better, but Continental still looks great
- not as reliable as T/C
- more complicated than T/C
- more stuff to go bad
- no hood ornament

Town Car
+ simpler

+ RWD
+ easier to work on
+ better looking
+ less complicated, expensive electronics
+ bigger interior, biggest trunk
+ NOTHING rides smoother
+ long hood
+ hood ornament

- Slower (but decently quick)
- sloppy handling
- 6 place seating
- typical octogenarian car
- less aftermarket with SOHC 4.6
- interior is better in Continental

What do you guys think?

I have heard about a lot of problems with the continental.
The last gen 98-02 Continental or the godawful 88-94 Continental?

I havent heard many bad things about the 98-02 Continentals from what I've read on carsurvey.org

Well... the shitpile 88-94 didnt have a V8.

I would recommend the Continental if the engine is what your after since its got the superb 32 Valve Cobra motor variant. If you want reliability and solidity then the TC is the way to go.

We have a 1991 Town Car, I know its a bit older, but that thing is reliable. Only problems that we have encountered are: starter didnt work, rear air suspension gave out (i kind of attribute this to some stuff I did, its a long story lol), wipers worked but would not lower themselves when wipers turned off (no big deal, as they could be lowered manually) and the automatic closing trunk motor is real iffy lately, sometimes it pulls the trunk down, sometimes it dosnt, but the trunk does latch. Burns a bit more oil now, but still runs perfectly fine, and never fails to start up (except that time with the starter!)

How many miles on yours? My coworker had a 91, when he sold it at 166k miles it never burned or leaked oil or coolant.

Mark VIII... NO QUESTION! Make sure you get one of the years with Xenon lights tho... or retrofit if necessary... the factory lamp housings on the 93-96 suck.

I am in the process of acquiring a 1994
White Town Car with 50K Miles, for my
reliable and comfortable winterbeater.
It won't show the road salt; and, the Black
Deville is a bitch to keep clean in the
snow season.

Best Regards,

TomDeville

1994 was my favorite year for Town Cars, the good front end, and the better interior.

Town Car > Continental. It's like eleventy billion times more pimp, and you can pretend to be in the mafia.

As for TC vs Mark VIII, they're both great, just depends if you want a big 4 door or a hot coupe.

Man, the Connie sucks. A Seville or a Mark VIII is much better if you want luxury sports. My grandad has a 00 Connie, the steering sucks, the fancy ride control does not work worth a damn and it's smaller than my seville. The 4.6 DOHC is ALOT tougher to work on and has LESS aftermarket goodies than the SOHC. The Towncar is SOOOOO much better than the Continental. Plus you have to look at the bigger picture, the headlights for the newer connies cost over $100 bucks apiece.
