It's a 1996 STS which invariably gives me a Emmision Control System message which triggers the check engine light to come on. It happens on acceleration .....any clues? Car runs great but this gets annoying.

Re: '96 STS Emmision Control System message

Pulled the codes but nothing revealing - I cleared the codes and will check again after the message re-appears. When the Emmision Control System message appears it also says EXP 104.....any idea what this is? I don't find this code in the long list of other codes.

can't be -
with that message - and an illuminated CHECK ENGINE light -
an emissions-related code MUST be set -

I cleared the codes
hmmmm - what codes?

When the Emmision Control System message appears
it also says EXP 104.....

any idea what this is?

YES -

I don't find this code in the long list of other codes.
MESSAGES - are not CODES -

ALL the Driver Information Center Messages
are discussed starting on page 2-80 of the Owners Manual -

this specific message is explained - in depth - on page 2-84 of the Owners Manual -

if you don't have the OM -
go here for a free download -

Re: '96 STS Emmision Control System message

Okay, found EXP 104 message in the OM but it just says service emission system. The codes I pulled were all history codes:
PC0101
PC0603
IP1552
PZ1552
PZ1558
RF2560
AC1348

I'm assuming that I might have some vacuum lines that need replacing as they are likely all original ?? The car runs great so I'm not overly concerned ...it is just getting annoying everytime I accelerate and have to clear the message. I'll pull the latest code that is generated tomorrow now that these others are cleared.

Re: '96 STS Emmision Control System message

EXP sounds like an export code.

Re: '96 STS Emmision Control System message

It's an EXPort code, but EXP 104 does not appear in my 2002 owner's manual.

EXPORT code - that system of about 40 codes that can appear in the DIC - each numeric code is keyed to a specific problem in the foreign language owner's manual.

crewser, Please bookmark, study and use these links - BUT - depending on the build date of your 1996 car there may be crossovers between OBD1 and OBD-II codes - early 96 was the change year.

104 is the DIC Message number - not a DTC code -

this - copied from the Owners manual -
SERVICE EMISSIONS SYSTEM - 104:
A problem in the emissions system has occurred when this message appears.
Have your Cadillac dealership service your vehicle.

-------------

when the above message appears on the DIC -
the CHECK ENGINE light will be illuminated -
and a DTC will be set -

====================

oh - and according to the codes you posted -
P0101 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance
the MAF sensor is most likely the one causing the problem -
could be loose air induction clamps

Tightened the clamps ...also removed the MAF sensor to check for carbon ...looks clean, blew a little air across it, replaced and will see if that helps.

The MAF sensor is upstream of the throttle plate and downstream of the air filter (between the two). It will always be clean and carbon free.

Thanks Ranger, however I found a post on Google ....someone with the same P0101 code and this course of action solved it. Possibly the sensor is caw-caw???

Tightened the clamps and no obvious damage to the sensor - still getting the "Emission Service" message. Any recommendations here. Would you recommend changing the sensor ?

IF you still have a MAF sensor code, that would be my next step. They DO fail occasionally.

No, I priced out a MAF sensor from a dealer by phone. I've been fortunate enough that I haven't had to purchase many parts for my gem. Obviously at that price I wasn't interested. Not my first BBQ Ranger.
