96 Deville cuts off at stop light

This problem is driving me crazy.

I've got a 96 Deville.

And after the car has had a little time to warm up...when you come to a stop light...it will cut off.

It starts right back up though.

Took it to the shop. They said it was a bad idle speed control.

They replaced it.

I get the car back...

And one day later..it's back to doing it again.

Took it back to the shop and left it over night.

The mechanic which by the way is my regular mechanic and I've been going to him for the past 10 years....

I don't think he would try to screw me..

He said he could not get the car to cut off.

I take the car back home.

It does it again.

I take it back to the shop.

I leave it for 2 day's and he calls me to say that he drove the car several times in the morning...and in the evening..and he couldn't get it to cut off.

Now let me say this.

Both me and my brother both use the car and it cuts off on the both of us repeatedly.

Has anybody had his problem?

Pretty sure its the Crankshaft Position Sensor(s). This is an EXTREMELY common problem on the 2000 and up Northstars but very RARE on the pre-2000 models. Still, Im pretty sure weve had it happen to the older cars here on more than one occasion.

Those are the exact symptoms of the CKP issue... it will just cut off out of no where and start right back up.

I haven't pulled the codes.

I'll do that.

I'll let you know what I come up with.

Thanks
I forgot to put this in my reply.

If it is the crankshaft sensor.

Does anyone have an idea about how much it costs to have the crankshaft sensor replaced?

Just a ball park figure will do.

Thanks

Good afternoon, my 96 is doing the exact same thing! And it is driving my nuts!! I haven’t taken it to a shop yet, did you have coffee pop up? I don’t have any codes at all in the dash but never pulled it, and did that fix the issue? Mine would do it so randomly even when turning the wheel

Welcome Aboard !!!! You'll get the hang of this place pretty quickly. Good ol' Tupelo.......

Crankshaft sensors need changed.
Do yourself a favor and get acdelco or delphi as aftermarket arw junk(yes I've been there).
Stalling at idle at a light or off pedal coastin to light a dead giveaway and 99% time only when car gets warm. It may stall at idle in park even. Almost never does a code pop up.
Sensors run 30 to 40 each takes an hr maybe two with beer break to change both.
Not horrible to do just a bit tight.

Thank you very much for that input! I will get one and put it on, those are the exact same symptom mine is doing and i have changed alternator, fuel filter and air filter, and no code as well on any computer. It’s still has a lot of life left in it and hate to give her up, thanks again!!
Always change in pairs as no way to know which one is bad/failing.
They are same number for both. Don't break the clips on wiring.. Or should I say good luck not breaking th em. Zip ties are your friend but replacement ends are available also. The clips are brittle from age and exhaust heat.

Good evening!! I must give you an update!! I change both Crankshaft sensors and discovered one of the sensors was plastic, with leads me to believe it’s been changed before. I put A/C Delco sensors and hasn’t had that issue anymore!! Thank you so much for that bit of information!!
Thanks for the update, most people don't bother so we never know the outcome.
