Started car yesterday to go to work & got message check coolant level. When i checked it took about 1/2 gallon. No noticeable leaks or wet spots anywhere does anyone have any thoughts. drove car about 60 miles & no problems, am I just being paranoid about the headgasket issues I've read about here ? any info would be appreciated.

I had the same thing happen about two weeks ago. In my case there was some coolant on the surge tank just below the nipple where the purge line connects. I thought it was the hose, so I cut 1/2" off the end of it and reclamped it, only to discover it was still dripping. Upon closer inspection I found a hairline crack at the nipple. A little JB Weld fixed it.

Check the tank closely as well as under it. Dried Dex-Cool (I have found) will leave a white residue.

Keep an eye on it until you find a leak. It would be good to know the frequency of how often you have to refill. If this is the first time you have topped off, it may be a very slow seeping leak.

Before I changed out my engine, on the old one I had a slight leak coming off the water pump housing - real hard to find at first. Weave your hand through the wires, hoses, and such, and feel the bottom of the aluminum w/p housing.

This would be a blessing if it's external.

Ranger, Had the water pump replaced about a year ago & had not really checked coolant level since then till I got the message the other day. Will keep a closer eye on it now & see what develops. Thanks for the help.
