Boy oh boy.. I'm just about to get rid of this car.. If it wasn't so beautiful it would have been gone long ago..

In the past 6 months I've went through 3 thermastats (they always get stuck for some reason)..

Now I'm driving home, 2 blocks from home, I get

BATTERY NO CHARGE.. And the power steering goes out..

Then it gets hot, so I'm getting 2 messages.. BNC and COOLANT HOT.. (the coolant started boiling like it does when the stat goes out)..

Any suggestions? It has 112K.. Been perfectly maintained.. If its a alternator, fine.. But why would it get hot and lose the battery at the same time..

Any help?

The tensioner has been noisy as hell for months.. I was getting ready to replace that soon... My mechanic said he has an extra one and can do it for 40 bucks.. Ya think it could be something THAT simple? (it is quite noisy)

Yes, think about it, you have one serpentine belt that drives your alternator, water pump, steering pump and A/C compressor. If the tensioner seizes or starts to slow down you are going to experience overheating, battery won't charge, A/C won't work right and it's gonna get hard to steer pretty soon...

Change out that tensioner and you may solve all your problems.

Thanks guys. I'm going to have it changed tomorrow, hopefully that will fix it.. I bet I need to throw another t-stat in it again just to be safe. Its not like I"ve had any MAJOR problems with the car. Just little dumb things that leave me stranded (bad t-stats)..

But to be honest, that tensioner has been noisy for a year, but its getting worse, so I hope it does the trick.

It's all good guy! :yup:

sonnycrack, your t-stat may be just fine but if you feel the need to replace again please do this. Before you buy a new one take the current one out and place it in a pot of water with a cooking thermometer in it. Turn on the heat and watch the pot boil! (I know, it'll take forever that way! :sneaky: ) Watch the t-stat as the temp rises. Make note of the temp at which it opens, then let it cool and check temp as it closes. Your stat may be OK. If it isn't check the new one the same way before you put it in.

Sure nuff, went outside with the flashlight. No belt..

Damn I'm an idiot..

Thanks guys!!

And I'mma replace the tension thing too.
